HAF Criteria

Understanding Free School Meals for Children in the UK

In the UK, there are three primary types of free school meals available for children:

  1. Universal Free School Meals
Universal Infant Free School Meals are provided for all children in reception year, year 1, and year These meals are automatically available to children upon entering reception and continue until the end of year 2. Parents do not need to apply for these meals as they are granted universally to all eligible children within these school years.
  2. Targeted Free School Meals
Targeted free school meals are the benefits-related free school meals available to children whose families meet the qualifying criteria. Children who receive targeted free school meals are eligible for HAF-funded holiday activities and food provision.
  3. Targeted Free School Meals
The eligibility criteria for free school meals has expanded to include more families receiving Universal Credit. These are known as expanded free school meals. Expanded free school meals do not qualify for HAF-funded sessions. HAF eligibility remains linked to targeted free school meals.

Families can determine their eligibility for free school meals by checking directly with the school the child(ren) attend.
