I will allow the student to explore playing the fiddle heading towards playing in a traditional/folk/ceilidh-dance style.

Alasdair Macrae
I have been playing the fiddle since I was a wee boy. I grew up playing in my mum's ceilidh-dance band which I was allowed to join when I was twelve. Since then I have played in sessions, bands, and festivals around the world both professionally and for fun. I work mainly as a musical director in the theatre, and as such have taught many 'enthusiastic' actors how to play a variety of instruments. I have run many fiddle workshops and taught many tunes to many people.

Learning aims

To be able to play a folk tune on the fiddle.

Strengths to develop

There's a huge amount of bodily co-ordination needed when playing the fiddle, an awareness of where one's body is in space. Like many instruments, it isn't just the parts of the body that manipulate the instrument but the whole body that is employed in playing the fiddle. Relaxation, breath and groundedness are all aspects of one's physicality that are developed.
