Willow Projects for Outdoor Practitioners

Wildly Curious

A summary
Are you looking to get to grips with the basics of working with willow?
Do you want to offer willow weaving as part of your outdoor provision?
Bring willow into your outdoor practice with a practical, hands-on day designed specifically for Forest School leaders and outdoor educators.
This workshop is brought to you by the Coddiwomplers and hosted by Wildly Curious.
As well as being experienced willow basket makers, the Coddiwomplers are both qualified and experienced primary school teachers, with nearly 30 years of teaching experience each. Mr F is a Level 3 Forest School Practitioner, and we both regularly deliver Forest School and outdoor learning sessions in schools.
This combination of basketry, teaching and Forest School experience means we have a wealth of practical knowledge to share, along with plenty of tips, advice and tried-and-tested ideas for working with willow alongside children.
What the day covers
The course introduces participants to a progression of basic willow skills, with plenty of opportunities to explore, practise and experiment.
We focus particularly on projects and techniques that work well with children, helping participants develop the confidence to use willow as part of their own outdoor provision.
We will also look at:
- Choosing the right willow for different projects
- Where to buy willow and what to look for
- How to soak and prepare willow
- Looking after and storing willow
- Choosing and using appropriate tools with children
- Adapting projects for different ages and abilities
- Practical tips for introducing willow work into your existing outdoor sessions
The morning is spent developing foundational skills and making several projects together. This gives everyone the opportunity to learn the basic techniques in a supportive, practical way.
The rest of the day is more exploratory. Participants can work at their own pace and choose from a large range of willow projects that the Coddiwomplers have developed, used and tested with children.
There is plenty of time to practise techniques, ask questions, experiment and develop ideas that you can take straight back to your own setting.
The aim is for everyone to finish the day feeling confident and inspired to use willow in their day-to-day outdoor practice.
