A summary

When the classroom doesn't fit: how play-based Forest School can unlock regulation, connection and growth for neurodivergent children.

Sarah and Hev share their experience of creating a trauma-informed, neuroaffirming Forest School space where neurodivergent children are able to truly thrive. Rooted in this year’s theme “Embers: The Power of Play”, this session invites us to reconsider what meaningful play looks like — and how, when we step back from our own expectations, we can begin to see the child’s experience more clearly.

Touching on some of the theories and practices that have helped to shape their provision, and drawing from real life experiences within the group, together we will explore.
• How play supports regulation, connection and growth
• Why some forms of play are often misunderstood or redirected
• What it means to create space for engagement on a child’s own terms
• How Forest School can offer something fundamentally different from traditional settings.
•' How to hold safe boundaries when pushing them is the game

Expect honest reflection, practical insight, and a gentle challenge to our assumptions. A powerful session for anyone supporting neurodivergent children — and for anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of play.
