A summary

Starting secondary school is an exciting milestone, but for many children it can also bring uncertainty, anxiety, and a lack of confidence. Our Arnewood School Transition Holiday Club has been specifically designed to help children make this important step feeling prepared, informed, and ready to thrive. Delivered in a fun, supportive, and engaging environment, the programme gives young people the opportunity to become familiar with the routines, expectations, and experiences they will encounter when they begin secondary school. Through a combination of practical activities, team challenges, workshops, and school-based experiences, children can build confidence while developing the skills they need for a successful transition. One of the biggest concerns children often have about moving to secondary school is navigating a larger environment and managing a more complex timetable. Our club helps participants understand how secondary school timetables work, practise moving between lessons, and develop organisational skills such as reading schedules, packing the correct equipment, and managing their time effectively. By introducing these concepts in a relaxed setting, children can approach their first day with greater confidence and independence. The programme also focuses on social and emotional wellbeing. Children have opportunities to meet new peers, make friends, and take part in activities that encourage communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Discussions and workshops explore common worries about secondary school, helping children understand that many of their peers share similar feelings. Staff provide reassurance, practical advice, and strategies for managing nerves and building resilience. Activities take place within the secondary school environment, allowing children to familiarise themselves with key areas such as classrooms, dining facilities, sports areas, and other important spaces. Becoming comfortable with the physical environment can significantly reduce anxiety and help children feel more settled before the start of term. The club also introduces children to some of the increased responsibilities that come with secondary school, including personal organisation, independent learning, positive behaviour expectations, and building healthy relationships with teachers and classmates. Through interactive and enjoyable activities, children gain a realistic understanding of what secondary school life is like while developing the confidence to embrace new opportunities. Our aim is simple: to ensure every child begins secondary school feeling prepared, capable, and excited about the journey ahead. By reducing uncertainty and providing practical experiences in a supportive setting, we help children build the confidence, resilience, and independence they need to make a positive and successful transition. Whether a child is feeling nervous, excited, or somewhere in between, our Secondary School Transition Holiday Club offers a welcoming space to learn, grow, and start the next chapter with confidence.
