A summary
Ready for Life Lab is a practical, confidence‑building programme designed to help young people develop the everyday skills they need to move towards greater independence. The session offers a calm, supportive environment where children of all abilities can explore real‑world tasks at their own pace, with plenty of encouragement, structure, and reassurance. Each activity is broken down into simple, achievable steps so that every learner can experience success, build confidence, and feel proud of what they can do. The programme covers a wide range of essential life skills. Children learn how to understand and manage money, from recognising coins and notes to practising simple budgeting and making choices about spending. They explore personal hygiene routines and why they matter, building healthy habits that support wellbeing. Basic cooking and eating skills are introduced through hands‑on, sensory‑friendly activities that help young people feel comfortable preparing simple meals, using kitchen equipment safely, and trying new foods in a relaxed way. Social interaction is woven throughout the session, with gentle opportunities to practise communication, turn‑taking, and everyday conversation. Children also learn about using public transport, including how to read simple timetables, plan a journey, use a bus safely, and understand when and how to book a taxi. Online safety is another key focus, helping young people recognise safe and unsafe situations, understand privacy, and build confidence navigating the digital world responsibly. Practical planning skills are developed through tasks such as writing shopping lists, organising small routines, and breaking down bigger jobs into manageable steps. For some children, depending on their needs and interests, there may even be opportunities to explore the early stages of starting a small business - thinking creatively about products, understanding simple costs, and learning how to share their ideas with others. Throughout the session, staff provide patient guidance, adapt activities to individual needs, and celebrate every achievement, no matter how small. Ready for Life Lab aims to empower young people with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to take meaningful steps towards independence, while ensuring they feel safe, supported, and valued every step of the way.
