A summary
Once a month, our much-loved Mud Kitchen pops up in Ravenscourt Park, inviting children (and grown-ups!) to dive headfirst into some seriously messy play. As a community-driven business, we aim to keep our events as financially accessible as possible — and it’s important to us to offer at least one free event each month. Enter: the Mud Kitchen. Cue the Mud Monster Parade… What is a Mud Kitchen? A Mud Kitchen is an outdoor play space inspired by a kitchen — with pots, pans, utensils, and sometimes even aprons. But instead of cooking with vegetables, children (and adults!) create their own recipes using mud, water, leaves, sticks, stones, and whatever else they discover along the way. It’s a wonderful way for children to... + get comfortable outdoors + explore their senses + build confidence through messy, open-ended play + spend unhurried time in nature. Each Mud Kitchen is a little different, but one thing is guaranteed: hands, clothes, and faces will get muddy. Timings & flow: We’ll be set up for two hours, from 10:00–12:00, but this is a drop-in style session. You’re welcome to arrive whenever suits you & leave whenever feels right for you and your family. There’s no pressure to stay for the full session, and no expectation to join the picnic afterwards — although you’re very welcome to if it works for you! A note on mess (and letting go): Here at Ways of the Wild, we're big on child-led play. This is a space where children are free to engage with the elements however they choose. If you’re used to saying things like “don’t touch that, it’s dirty” or “be careful, it will tip over”, — this might be your invitation to gently throw those rules out the window (just for today). Research shows that time spent playing in natural environments can support wellbeing and help children build resilience and confidence. The way adults respond to mess plays a big role in how children experience it — so we encourage you to relax, let your guard down, and maybe (hopefully...) even get a little muddy yourself! WHAT TO BRING: + Spare clothes and extra layers + Waterproof shoes / boots / wellies + Waterproof trousers or overalls + Wipes and/or a small towel + Snacks + Packed lunch + Drinks + Picnic blanket Your child may be very proud of their mud face paint — but you’ll probably both appreciate clean clothes afterwards! Picnic & wind-down: After the session ends, we pack away the resources and invite everyone to stay for a relaxed picnic. We’ll lay out blankets and take some time to refuel, rest, and chat. The more the merrier <3 Whether you’re looking to support your child’s sensory and imaginative play, or you’re simply curious about what we do and fancy a chat, we’d love to see you there.
