Step Into the Design Studio This Summer Are you an 11–14-year-old who loves creating, building, drawing, and solving problems? Or a parent looking for a creative, educational summer experience that develops confidence, teamwork, and practical design skills? IDEA Architecture, Interior & Product Design Summer Boot Camp is an exciting 10-day hands-on programme where young people become designers, makers, and inventors. Students will work together in a real studio environment, learning how professional designers turn ideas into reality. The Challenge: Design & Build Your Own Furniture Great design is about more than making things look good. It’s about understanding people’s needs, solving problems, and creating something useful. During the boot camp, our young designers will work in teams to design and build a full-size furniture piece. From the first sketch to the final build, students will experience every stage of the design process while developing practical making skills and creative confidence. Meet Real Designers Throughout the programme, students will meet practising Architects, Interior Designers, and Product Designers who will visit the studio to share their work, answer questions, and provide feedback on student projects. This gives students a unique opportunity to learn how design shapes the world around us and explore exciting future career pathways. What You Will Learn & Create Over 10 exciting days, students will explore the complete design journey: Discover Learn how designers observe and understand people's needs Explore materials, shapes, and structures Develop creative thinking and sketching skills Develop Build small-scale models and prototypes Test ideas and improve designs through experimentation Learn how different materials behave and support weight Make Safely use studio tools and equipment Construct and assemble a full-size furniture piece Work collaboratively to solve real design challenges Present Create a design sketchbook documenting ideas and progress Photograph completed work professionally Present projects to tutors, industry guests, and family members Why Attend? This boot camp encourages creativity, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork—skills that are valuable in school and beyond. Students will leave with: A full design sketchbook Scale models and prototypes Professional photographs of their finished project New making and design skills Increased confidence in presenting their ideas A better understanding of architecture, interior design, and product design Most importantly, they will experience the excitement of turning an idea into something real. Key Details Dates: Monday, 17 August – Friday, 28 August (excluding weekends) Time: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Location: Lyric Hammersmith Theatre Who: 11–14 year olds Capacity: Strictly limited to 24 places to ensure personalised support and workshop safety. Materials Provided: All materials, tools, safety equipment, and sketchbooks are included.
