Library address: Ipswich County Library, Northgate Street, Ipswich, IP1 3DE 30 March: Explore the world of Zines with Illustrator Dex Walker-Legon Explore the world of zines, the easiest books to make. Learn how you can draw, collage and write to create stories, talk about your interests, or raise awareness in a way you can share easier than online! Zines emerged most prominently in punk culture in the 1970s but were used for fans to discuss media even earlier. This workshop will teach a little about the history of zines, why they’re still popular today, and how you can make your own with drawing, collaged materials and a photocopier. The day is likely to start with an overview and some general creative warmups before a bit of history and a more structured zine-writing exercise. After that, we can start working with collaged letters, drawing materials and plan out our text or narrative for a final zine. About Dex: Dex is an illustrator and writer based in Norwich. His practice ranges from illustrating fiction to character design and worldbuilding, and has collaborated on products and projects with the Sainsbury Centre and Norwich City F.C. 10 April: How to Write Song Lyrics with Musician Charlie Law In this workshop you will learn how to write a song from scratch with singer-songwriter Charlie Law. You will search for lyrical ideas in ‘Wildlands’, a book written by local author Brogen Murphy (which you will get to keep after the workshop). As a group, you will use the words you find in the book to create lyrics, and Charlie will help you create a melody and chords for a chorus. You’ll spend the rest of the morning creating more lyrics for verses. After lunch you will record the song as a group on a Zoom H6 recorder, which will be professionally mixed and mastered, and sent out to you as an mp3 which you can listen to at home. You’ll also receive Blank Page Notebooks, so you can carry on writing lyrics long after the workshop. About Charlie: Suffolk’s Charlie Law is a singer-songwriter-guitarist who sings songs about camper vans and canal boats. Proudly DIY Charlie built a music career around busking on London’s Southbank, before recording and releasing albums in his bedroom and going on to play gigs with Frank Turner, Turin Brakes and Ed Sheeran. Charlie believes learning to write songs changed his life and teaches his process in community settings.

Eloise
Digital Artist & Librarian
I'm Eloise! I'm a freelance artist specialising in Digital Art & Stylized Illustration. My initial inspiration to draw came from being immersed in stories from graphic novels, anime, and video games. I've also been drawing digitally since I was young so I've become quite savvy with it! I've since explored all sorts of different artstyles and methods, but I always come back to the styles that inspired me to draw in the first place, and I want to support young artists in creating from their own inspiration in my Blank Page workshops! I'm also a Librarian at Stowmarket Library and will be supporting other awesome artists in these workshops! I'm happy to bounce back and help fuel any of your wonderfully creative ideas =) In my free time, as well as playing video games and reading (obviously), I enjoy fashion and am learning to crochet.
Charlie Law
Singer-Songwriter
Charlie Law is a storytelling songwriter from Suffolk, UK who sings about his adventures in camper vans, canal boats and starting a family. His guitar playing is steeped in the thumb picking fingerstyle of old ragtime music, passed onto him by his Grandpa who didn’t have the strength to play, but knew how to do it. Charlie’s baritone tenor voice (the same as John Lennon) has a rich tone, with soft falsetto in the style of Jeff Buckley and a Paolo Nutini Rasp when the music bites. More recently Charlie has been facilitating songwriting workshops in a variety of community settings. May music fill up your heart, Drink with me your flowing glass, Sing with me for all that’s nice, For joy in music is joy in life. - Charlie Law
