A summary

Heswall Camp is a week long holiday residential for disabled children aged 9-16.
We will have great days filled with activities and this year's theme is 'Wirral going on a summer holiday'.
We will be kayaking, climbing, shooting and we are looking into an accessible indoor skiing adventure!
All the care is provided by trained volunteers who go through Safer Recruitment and Enhanced DBS checks.
Children with a wide range of disabilities are welcome to join us, subject to an application process, detailed care plans and MAR charts so our volunteers are well equipped to provide great care.
We will copy the care which works well for the child in other settings or provided by parents and carers.

Building Confidence and Independence

We pride ourselves in having volunteers on each camp who have lived experience of disabilies and many have actually been campers in the past.
Because of this, we have great aspirations to suppot the children in experiencing everything they want to achieve on their own terms.
Children may require more support for specific activities and at certain points of the day and our team is flexible enough to respond to those needs.
We will also provide a key person for each child, so they will know who to talk to who and all care is consistent for them.

A summer camp for disabled children

Heswall Disabled Children's Holiday Fund

We are an Ofsted registered disabled children's holiday scheme. Children will stay with us for a week and enjoy activities aimed at developing confidence and independence. Our volunteer provide all the care and support they need.

Learning aims

Aim 1

Teamwork, friendship and communication. Many of our campers have not been away from home before or will be in a new group. Teambuilding helps us learn names and new friends.

Aim 2

Confidence: Developed through achievement. Archery, climbing, kayaking and sports provide a huge YES moment to say 'I did that' and a new skill show off with confidence.

Aim 3

Pacing/Mindfulness: Parallel activities based on sensory or theraputic activities. We appreciate taking a moment and realising when each child needs a break.

Aim 4

Independence: Children develop self-reliance by spending time away from home and managing daily care needs. We support this by having key people know each care plan.

Aim 5

Self-Esteem: We discover hidden talent in a low-stakes environment, free from competitive pressure and acknowledging when someone has done their best.

Aim 6

Empathy & Awareness: Not all disabilities are the same and this is a chance for children to interact with those with other needs, learning cues, patience and communication.

Aim 7

Curiosity: We ignite an interest in the natural world through day camping, science and art through projects and fun activities which are accessible to the group.

Aim 8

Unplugging: We encourage all campers to leave their devices at home. Be in the moment, enjoy the experience and achieve your own goals each day.
