A summary
A recent survey found that while only 17% of UK children could correctly identify an oak tree and only 3% could identify a beech, nearly 50% could identify a stinging nettle. Sadly though this is probably not for very positive reasons! This workshop aims to build some positive associations for this under appreciated plant, covering ecology, folklore from Norse to Nigerian, fibre crafts and tasty treats.

As the Project Officer, I'm pleased to be organising the annual Forest School Association Conference. I am appearing as a Mentor on each workshop to give me oversight and allow me to help out on the day, I may not actually be on your workshop.
What we'll do
? Discuss nettles' place in the ecosystem, as food for 3 easily identifiable butterflies. ?️ Learn how nettles can be used as a navigation aid, and what they can tell us about a site's history. ? Examine the structure of nettle stings using magnifying glasses and learn how cleverly this plant protects itself. ?️ Learn some legends of nettles, beer and thunder gods, from Scandinavia and Nigeria. ? Listen to a story about nettle shirts and swans, and learn how to harvest nettles without getting stung and make string from them. ☕ Drink some tasty nettle tea and toast some nettle seeds, then use them in pancakes
