Geology Walk - Goodrington and Saltern Cove

One of our favourite geowalks, taking advantage of very low tides to explore the cliffs and coast around Googrington and Saltern Cove.

On this walk we will take advantage of the low tides and walk around the headland from Goodrington to Saltern Cove, returning via the coast path. Along the way we will see evidence of volcanic activity, strange trace fossils in ancient deserts, and one of the most famous unconformities in the region - a place where time is missing from the rock record as if several chapters had been torn from a book.

Rich is a local geologist and teacher who has been interested in the rocks of Torbay and south Devon since he was young. He now runs Taleblazers, a community interest company based around storytelling, natural history, folklore and heritage.

This is a fabulous walk with some great geological wonders. No geological knowledge is needed for this walk, just an interest in the rocks that make up this stunning part of the world. Numbers are strictly limited for your safety and to allow us to pitch our descriptions at your level. The walk is mainly flat, though we do walk uphill over a small headland on our return.

Please meet outside the South Sands cafe at the south end of Goodrington beach. The nearest car park is on Cliff Park Road; from here it is just a short stroll downhill under the railway bridge to our meeting point.
