A summary

Futsal Academy U8 is a weekly futsal session for children in Years 2 and 3, run by Newham Sports Club at Rokeby School in Canning Town, London E16. Sessions are Monday evenings, 5.00–6.00pm, through the school term.

WHEN AND WHERE

Mondays, 5.00–6.00pm, at Rokeby School, Barking Road, London E16 4DD. The sports hall is a five-minute walk from Canning Town station and there is parking on site.

WHO IT IS FOR

Children in Years 2 and 3, roughly ages 6–8. Boys and girls train together. Beginners are welcome — most children who join have never played futsal before, only football.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A SESSION

An hour, indoors, on a hard court with a low-bounce futsal ball. Every session follows the club's written curriculum: a warm-up, a technical block on that week's topic, a small-sided game where the children have to use it, and a short review at the end. Groups are small, so every child gets a lot of touches rather than standing in a queue.

WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL LEARN THIS TERM

Dribbling with the head up, passing to a team-mate, and finding space.

COST AND PLACES

£70 for the full term of 14 sessions, or £10 for a single session if you would like to try it first. There are 12 places in the U8 group. When it is full, EEQU will show the session as sold out — register your interest and we will contact you when a place opens.

WHAT TO BRING

Indoor trainers with non-marking soles, comfortable sports clothing, shin pads, and a refillable water bottle. Futsal is played indoors, so outdoor boots cannot be worn on the court.

QUESTIONS PARENTS ASK

What is futsal, and how is it different from football?

Futsal is the five-a-side indoor game recognised by FIFA. It is played on a hard court with a smaller, heavier ball that does not bounce much. The pitch is tight and the ball is always in play, so children touch it far more often than in eleven-a-side football. It is why so many professional footballers grew up playing it.

Does my child need any experience?

No. Most children arrive having played football in the park or at school and nothing else. Our coaches are used to starting from there.

Who runs the sessions?

Newham Sports Club coaches, all qualified and DBS-checked. Our lead academy coaches are Abdirhaman Mohamed and Tim Polius.

Can we try one session before booking the term?

Yes. Book a single session for £10. If your child enjoys it, you can book the rest of the term afterwards.

What if we miss a week?

Places are booked for the term as a block, so we are not able to refund or carry over missed sessions. Please do still come back the following week — the curriculum is built so a child can pick it up again.

Learning aims

Aim 1

Block 1 - Your Sole Is Your Hand (Sep-Oct, 7 weeks) "Your sole is your hand." Sole rolls against a timed count with both feet, toe taps and tick-tocks at speed, the V-pull, sole rolls while walking forward, keeping the ball under the sole in a crowded area, killing a fast ball then accelerating away, and shielding against a jockeying defender.

Aim 2

Block 2 - Beating Your Opponent (Nov-Dec, 7 weeks) "Set them up, then go." Going past a defender with a change of pace alone, the feint, the chop, the drag-back and turn away, choosing a side by reading where the defender's weight has settled, 1v1 from three starting positions, and 1v1 to goal against a count.
