What we'll do
During this 2 hour workshop we will explore Fire lighting progressions beyond basic Fire steels and cotton wool. This workshop is aimed at giving you the skills and confidence to support your learners as they move beyond basic fire lighting skills. We will experiment with the use of natural tinders with a fire steel. Getting to understand the properties of each, how to harvest them and prepare each for use. We will look at different ignition sources including Flint and Steel, Solar and friction. We will also learn how to make an effective tinder bundles to allow us to take and ember and create a flame.

As the Project Officer, I'm pleased to be organising the annual Forest School Association Conference. I am appearing as a Mentor on each workshop to give me oversight and allow me to help out on the day, I may not actually be on your workshop.
Learning aims
Aim 1
At the end of this session learners should be able to identify and prepare a range on natural tinders for fire lighting purposes.
Aim 2
Learners will be experienced in the use of Flint and Steel fire lighting techniques including making tinder bundles and taking an ember through to flame.
Aim 3
Learners will be familiar with the use of a range of alternative fire ignition sources, including solar and friction.
