About your mentor
Fire and Fell
Outdoor learning provider
I'm Kate, a mum of three young children living in North Cumbria and founder of Fire and Fell. I love being outdoors and have always believed that some of the best moments in childhood happen outside — getting muddy, building dens and exploring the natural world. I have recently moved to the Caldbeck area with my family, having been born and brought up in Oxfordshire. I have over ten years' experience delivering outdoor learning across schools, community groups and specialist SEND settings, and have run my own outdoor learning business alongside a career as a SEND teacher down in Oxford. I am a qualified teacher and hold full public liability insurance. All sessions are fully risk assessed. - Level 2 Outdoor First Aid trained - Level 2 Food Hygiene trained - Paediatric First Aid Trained - DSL (Level 3) Safeguarding trained
What we'll do
Our sessions are outdoors, child-led and play-based. Children have the space and freedom to play outdoors however they choose — building dens, making mud pies, swinging in hammocks or inventing games with their friends in the woods. We also always have structured activities each session on offer. These could include; tool use and whittling, campfire cooking, fire lighting, outdoor crafts and team games. No two sessions are the same. The only constant is smiling faces and muddy knees at the end of the day! A timetable for the day would normally look like this: 9am Arrival and adventure/story trail 9:45 Welcome games and a welcome snack and drink 10:30 - 11:45 Morning activities choice; hammocks, mud kitchen, den-building, nature study, craft activities, foraging, outdoor cookery 11:45 Lunch 12:45 Afternoon activities choice: scavenger hunt, team games, whittling and tool use 2pm Storytelling 2:30 Adventure trail and go home What to bring: Sturdy shoes Waterproof jacket and trousers Sun hat, sun tan lotion (in the warmer months!) A packed lunch A refillable water bottle — fresh air and adventure is thirsty work! A spare change of clothes is always great to have just in case The day sessions are £33 per day and there is a discout for weekly (2 day bookings) at £60. Sibling/twin discounts are also available. HAF funded places will also be made available.
Learning aims
Aim 1
Build confidence and self-esteem through achievable challenges and free play in a natural setting.
Aim 3
Foster a connection with nature and an appreciation of the natural world
Aim 5
Encourage creativity and curiosity through open-ended, child-led exploration
Aim 7
Support physical development through outdoor movement and hands-on activity
Aim 2
Develop resilience by encouraging children to take manageable risks and learn from experience
Aim 4
Support social skills like communication, cooperation, and problem solving through group activities
Aim 6
Develop practical skills like tool use, fire craft, and foraging in a safe, supervised environment
Inclusivity
Our holiday clubs are open to all children. The outdoors is a brilliant environment for neurodivergent children and those with additional needs, and we strive to make every child feel welcome. Between us, our staff have twenty years' experience working with SEND students in the outdoors. We work on a ratio of 1:8, and children attending would need to be able to participate with this level of support. Please get in touch before booking if you'd like to discuss your child's needs and check suitability.
