What we'll do
Drugs + Alcohol education. We'll be learning about the different kinds of drugs, how they feature in our society, and how the young people can maybe taking on the responsibility of being a peer educator in the future. Please see 'learning aims' for more details on what we plan to cover in the sessions. It will also be led by the young people's level and interests.

Hello, I'm Catty :)
I am a trained child/adolescent counsellor & psychotherapist, having trained with Place2Be. I also work for Brook (brook.org.uk), as a Education + Wellbeing Specialist. In addition I volunteer with Shout crisis helpline, Quest youth club and am a Home Host for Nightstop. I have experience delivering workshops and sessions on a wide range of PSHE topics and in schools across England.
Learning aims
Aim 1
common everyday drugs: painkillers, NSAIDS, medicines, and hospital use.
Aim 3
an outline of different illegal drugs; names/nicknames, effects (stimulant, depressant, hallucinogen), hazards.
Aim 5
safety if someone else has taken drugs (in street, at a party, etc) including cutting with other substances and purity fluctuating over time.
Aim 7
how drugs are classed and regulated in the UK, and approaches in other countries (Portugal's decriminalisation, Amsterdam, USA's 'War on Drugs') and how race and class plays into that.
Aim 9
briefly touch on addiction being not wholly about chemical dependency or 'lack of willpower', but about societal/cultural/human connection and mental health.
Aim 2
alcohol and nicotine, and vapes. Effects, hazards, usage.
Aim 4
I will be discouraging taking illegal drugs both due to personal legal ramifications, ethical reasons due to supporting drugs trade which is damaging worldwide, and safety reasons (e.g. doctors train for 6 years minimum to learn to safely provide correct dose of even minor drugs)
Aim 6
who the majority of users are, and stereotypes.
Aim 8
talking about pressure (to do anything), and where these pressures come from, and the ideas in popular culture (e.g. 'teenagers are supposed to be hedonistic and not sensible', or ideas about university environment).
Aim 10
signposting to further information from reliable sources (talktofrank.com and drugwise.org.uk), and encouraging conversation with their family
