What we'll do
Each morning our minibus will pick up adventurers in Cockermouth at 9am and bring them to the beautiful Derwent Hill, just outside Keswick. The children and their tutors will decide what outdoor activity will be best that morning. It might be canoeing out to island on Derwent Water for hot chocolate or it might be getting harnesses and ropes organised to climb up the nets and logs of our High Challenge equipment or it might be learning how to light fires in our bush craft area in the woods. Other options include low ropes course, orienteering, kayaking, paddle boarding, abseiling, rock climbing, gorge walking, mountain walking and mine exploring. Every one will come back into the centre for lunch at 12.30ish, and then back out for a different adventure in the afternoon. At 3.30pm we will herd the happy, tired, wet, muddy children back into the bus and bring them back to Cockermouth full of stories of adventure. About your mentors
Derwent Hill Outdoor Education and Training Centre
Life changing outdoor education
Derwent Hill has been leading amazing outdoor education adventures in the Lake District since 1962. We are owned by Sunderland Council and so, during term time, we have nearly 3,000 children a year from Sunderland stay with us for a lifechanging residential. With 28 acres of grounds and access to the lakes, mountains and rivers of the Lake District we use our wild and beautiful surroundings to develop team working, communication, independence, resilience, and most of all, to have fun.
Derwent Hill Outdoor Education Centre
To inspire people to achieve their potential
Derwent Hill is owned and operated by Sunderland City Council in a fantastic setting in the English Lake District – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was one of the first local authority outdoor education centres in England and has been in operation since 1962. The centre has grown since then and we now provide a wide range of services, but our core purpose is still the same: to provide high quality residential outdoor education for the children and young people of Sunderland, which includes some of the most deprived areas in the country. The income we generate from other work is used to keep down the costs of courses for schools and youth groups. We operate year-round and employ about 30 staff.
