A five-day extended course with Adam Tetlow.
Participants on this five-day SAOG Studios course will learn the fundamental principles of Celtic Geometry with Adam Tetlow.
For the first time Adam Tetlow is combining his 'Celtic Pattern, Geometry and Imagination' with elements from 'Celtic Zoomorphic Patterns' and 'Integrating Islamic and Celtic Patterns.
The course will explore the interplay between traditional geometry and imaginative freehand ornament within
Celtic Art from its Palaeolithic beginnings through to its Classical and Christian periods. Students will learn to draw and compose the traditional forms of Celtic knot work, zoomorphic animal patterns and Celtic key patterns as well as the unique geometrical methods of compass drawn spiral patterns. The Celtic practice of composing manuscript pages using the geometry of squares and proportional rectangles will also be covered.
We will explore the interplay and combine the unique methods exemplified by the Celtic and Islamic genius. The Celts developed a system of manipulating Knot-work and Key patterns on an underlying grid, and the Islamic artists developed symmetry groups and tessellations unseen in other parts of the world. By working with the unique aspects of both of these traditional practices, students will learn to adorn their Islamic work with Celtic forms and their Celtic work with Islamic symmetries.

Adam Tetlow is an artist, ethno-mathematician, writer and teacher. He graduated from the PSTA's MA programme in 2003. He is the author of Celtic Pattern - Visual Rhythms of the Ancient Mind, co-author of Sacred Number, and contributor to Quadrivium and Designa and Trivium, all published by Wooden Books. His forthcoming book Ancient Metrology: Harmonic Number Science, is the summation of four years of research in close consultation with John Neal. Adam teaches geometry courses with the PSTA Daniel Docherty is co-founder and senior tutor at SAOG Studios, Emerson College and a visiting tutor at The Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts, London. Daniel is particularly interested in how the revered quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy) inform the world’s artistic and cultural traditions. He lives with his family on the glorious Ashdown Forest.
