A summary
Go behind the scenes in a real theatre and learn how a show comes together. Young people will get hands-on with sound, lighting, props, stage set-up and backstage teamwork, learning the practical skills that support live performance. They will explore how technical choices help create atmosphere, keep a show running smoothly and support performers on stage. The course ends with helping to bring a small final sharing to life for family and friends, with lunch, snacks and drinks included each day. What a typical day looks like Each day includes a welcome, hands-on technical activities, practical demonstrations, lunch, and time to try backstage tasks such as props, lighting, sound and stage set-up. Young people will work towards supporting a small final sharing. Food and drinks Lunch, snacks and drinks are included each day. We will offer healthy, child-friendly food and will take account of allergies, dietary requirements and cultural needs. What to wear Please wear comfortable clothes and sensible shoes, as some activities involve moving around the theatre and helping with practical set-up. Final sharing At the end of the course, young people will help support a small informal performance for family and friends, using the skills they have learned during the week.

The Blakehay is a friendly community theatre in Weston-super-Mare where children, young people and families can watch, take part and try something new. We use a real theatre setting to help people build confidence, learn creative and practical skills, and feel part of something positive, supportive and fun.
Learning aims
Aim 1
Young people will understand the basic backstage elements of a performance, including sound, lighting, props and stage set-up.
Aim 2
Young people will develop practical teamwork skills by taking part in shared technical tasks and supporting a live theatre environment.
Aim 3
Young people will be able to use simple technical theatre skills to help prepare and support a small final performance for family and friends.
