What we'll do
Ujhasuma Africa delivers inclusive, engaging, and culturally enriching holiday activities that combine African drumming, instrumental ensemble performance, African food experiences, creative play, and cultural learning for children and young people aged 5–17. Our programme is designed to be accessible, sensory-rich, and adaptable, ensuring that children of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), can participate fully and confidently. Participants will explore the vibrant world of African music through hands-on experiences with traditional instruments such as djembes, talking drums, shakers, and balafons (African wooden xylophones). Through guided group activities, children will learn rhythm patterns, ensemble skills, listening techniques, and creative musical expression. Children who already play instruments such as piano, guitar, violin, cello, brass, or woodwind instruments are encouraged to bring them along and explore how they can be incorporated into African-inspired ensemble performances. Alongside music-making, children will engage in fun recreational games, team-building activities, and creative play sessions that encourage social interaction, confidence-building, and positive friendships. The programme also introduces children to African cultures through storytelling, cultural discussions, and interactive learning activities that celebrate diversity, heritage, and global citizenship. A key feature of the programme is the food experience element, where children learn about African cuisines, healthy eating, and the cultural significance of food within African communities. Nutritious meals and snacks will be provided in line with the objectives of the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, helping children develop positive attitudes towards healthy food choices. Our facilitators bring extensive experience in education, music, youth engagement, and community development. The team includes experienced music educators and practitioners who are skilled in delivering inclusive activities that support children's personal, social, and creative development. Staff members are trained in SEND awareness, safeguarding, behaviour support, and inclusive practice, ensuring every child receives appropriate support and encouragement. All staff hold enhanced DBS checks and adhere to rigorous safeguarding, health and safety, and risk assessment procedures. A SEND-aware member of staff will be available throughout the programme to provide additional support where required and to ensure that every participant can access activities in a safe and welcoming environment. The programme promotes creativity, confidence, teamwork, cultural awareness, healthy living, and personal wellbeing. Through music, food, play, and cultural exploration, children are empowered to develop new skills, build friendships, and create positive holiday memories in an environment where everyone feels included, valued, and inspired to participate.
