A summary
Did you know there are 18 species of bats in the UK? Join us and the London Wildlife Trust for a sunset-into-dusk family adventure to discover which of these marvellous creatures fly over Sydenham Hill Wood and Dulwich Wood at night. This event funded by southwark council is designed with neurodiverse families in mind — a relaxed pace, small group size, and plenty of space to explore the woods in your own way, together. We'll begin with a short, friendly introduction to bats before heading into the woods with bat detectors, tuning in to the echolocation calls bats use to hunt — and hopefully spotting a few in flight as the light fades. What to expect: - A fully outdoor, sunset-into-twilight walk through ancient woodland - Bat detectors provided (bring your own too, if you have one!) - A calm, small-group atmosphere - A chance to experience the woods at a completely different time of day - Friendly, patient guides happy to adapt the pace for the group IMPORTANT INFORMATION: We are traveling from the meeting point (Michael Faraday's memorial at Elephant and Castle SE1) at 6:30pm to Dulwich Woods where it will take place. You may join us there if you would like at 7:25pm : Cox's Walk Entrance SE26

Marine Bernier-Harrington
Co-Founder & Director
Hello, my name is Marine and I am a founder member of The Neurodiversity Family Hub. I am dyslexic and have neurodiverse children. My journey in the realm of neurodiversity began 15 years ago when one of my children, just 2 years old at the time, exhibited distinctive traits that set them apart from neurotypical individuals. Through a relentless seven-year battle within the educational and medical systems, my child received a comprehensive diagnosis, encompassing Autism, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Dyslexia, and a severe language disorder. Fuelled by my experience, I embarked on an educational quest, immersing myself in the intricate worlds of Autism and Neurodiversity. My initial educational background includes a Master's Degree in Direct Marketing, and I worked in that field for years until I transitioned to the charity sector. My journey within the field of neurodiversity inspired me to expand my skill set by becoming a certified Transformational Life Coach, specializing in the Person-Centered (Rogerian) approach to accompany Parents of Neurodiverse Children and their children. And I am passionate about making sure Young Neurodiverse people and their families live happy lives in a caring community

Common Questions
Is this walk suitable for neurodiverse children? Yes — this event is specifically designed for neurodiverse children and their families. We keep the group small, the pace relaxed, and our guides are happy to adjust as needed. There's no pressure to "perform" any activity — you're welcome to explore at your own comfort level. What age range is this suitable for? This is a whole-family event. We recommend it for children old enough to walk comfortably outdoors in the dark for around 90 minutes, but younger children are welcome if accompanied closely by an adult. Will it be very dark? We'll be walking as the sun sets and dusk falls, so it gradually gets darker. We provide red-light torches (which are gentler on eyes and don't disturb bats) and there will always be a guide with you. Do we need to bring anything? Just comfortable outdoor shoes/wellies and a layer for cooler evening air. Bat detectors and red-light torches are provided, though you're welcome to bring your own. What if my child finds loud noises or busy environments overwhelming? The woods are quiet and the bat detectors emit gentle clicking sounds rather than loud noise. Group size is capped at 30, and we're happy to talk in advance about specific sensory needs — just get in touch before the day. What happens if it rains? Bats are less active in heavy rain, so we'll keep an eye on the forecast and let you know if the date needs to change. Light drizzle won't stop the walk. Where exactly do we meet? You can join the group meet-up at Elephant & Castle station, or come directly to the Cox's Walk entrance to Sydenham Hill Wood (Dulwich Common/Lordship Lane). Full details sent on booking. Is the terrain accessible? The woods have some uneven, natural woodland paths. Sturdy footwear is recommended. Let us know in advance if you have specific accessibility needs and we'll do our best to advise.
Learning aims
Aim 1
To find a community to bond with, a community that does not judge and accepts your family as they are (a family starts for us as soon as there is one carer and a child).
Aim 2
To inspire curiosity and connection with nature through discovering bats and the wildlife of local woodlands at dusk.
Aim 3
For neurotypical siblings to have a positive experience with Neurodiversity.
