A summary
An exciting opportunity for children to have a "taster" of a Little Wren Cooking class. A chance to see what you think or even build your own group sessions going forward. Come along and join in a fun, hands on taster cooking session for children aged 8-13. The session will last for an hour and a half, but if the weather is kind you are invited to stay and enjoy your food in the lovely garden and chat about future cooking plans! Even if your child's cooking experience has been limited, you will be in for a surprise when you see what they can actually create! The sessions will be kept small, with up to 6 children, so that the children can get the attention they need and deserve. It will always be me, Lisa, running the classes so the children will know what to expect when they return. Little Wren Cooking's classes are taught in my workshop at home in Ashurst Wood where we really can have fun, make a mess and delicious dishes whilst learning such a wide array of skills. Because of the current climate, the children will work on their own elements (but would usually also do some group work). Depending on the recipes for the days (more information to come soon!), the children will be working on skills including weighing, mixing, beating, kneading, chopping, rolling, stirring, counting, measuring, whisking, decorating, tearing, layering, sprinkling, mashing, squeezing, pricking, constructing, enveloping even tickling (though maybe not all of these in one class!). Safety is paramount for cooking with children (and adults too!!), so we also learn about keeping ourselves safe, keeping the food safe and areas clean and tidy to prevent cross-contamination. I encourage the children to try to taste new things (so long as it does not contain raw eggs or raw meat) and get an understanding of where their food comes from. We collect our own eggs from our resident chickens, herbs from the garden and enjoy exploring the different textures, smells and tastes of the different herbs. We also explore seasonality of food and can sometimes also use my fresh home grown produce that we pick there and then. I hope to expand the fruit and veg beds in my garden this year. The session cost includes all of the ingredients, use of the equipment and tuition and is run on a drop off basis due to space limitations (family and pre-schooler classes are available at Little Wren). Class menus can be adapted to dietary requirements (please note that both the workshop and kitchen are environments where we work with nuts, dairy and gluten). My goal since starting Little Wren Cooking nearly 4 years ago has been to make learning to cook as accessible, fun and relaxed as possible. I want to encourage a love and understanding of food. The benefits of home cooked food is huge, from the health perspective through to something more personal, the sense of accomplishment, and pride, encouraging that scientific sense of wonder. Cooking helps develop a range of skills, from communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, creativity, logic and so forth. Bookings need to be made at least 5 days before the class to enable me to source the ingredients and prepare the class schedule. Should you be looking to book within those 5 days, please do get in touch in case space is available. Please see further details for cancellation information
About your mentor
Lisa James
Cooking for fun with Little Wren
I have always enjoyed crafts and creating things. I have been cooking since I was a little girl, helping my Nanna and having fun experimenting in my Mum’s kitchen. I have passed this love on to my daughter and many other children now. I love being around people, especially children, and helping them to discover their creative talents. I have a very patient teaching style, which is definitely needed for cooking with children! Cooking is an absolute passion of mine and I'm rather good at it. It's where I can truly express myself. I love looking through recipes and understanding how they work. I worked as a solicitor in my days before motherhood and believe so many of the skills I acquired there are transferrable to cooking. I believe so much in the power of cooking to help with many other aspects of our lives, to empower us, encourage us and allow our self expression. Cooking from a young age inspires children (and adults!) to try new foods, try new things in life, not be afraid to get things wrong, feel proud of their achievements and set them on a good track for life long positive eating.
