A SUMMARY
A course for fundamental skills and understanding for young people to stay safe and curious in the great connected internet. Each learner will need their own laptop - tablet computers aren't suitable for these lessons. Laptops needn't be flashy or especially modern, but they must be capable of running simple office software and connecting to the internet. Lesson plan intentions: Week 1: Introduction to using internet-capable devices and computer security (What viruses are, where they can be found, the damage they can do, and how they can be prevented) Week 2: Introduction to the use of office software in general, and using word processor software. Week 3: Using Publisher/print layout style software. Demonstrating the difference to typical word processors and having the class design flyers or posters. If there is time, a fun but instructive side-project creating animations using a simple frame-by-frame hand drawn animation maker. Week 4: Excel/Spreadsheet software, specifically why it is useful, how to navigate a spreadsheet, and how to run basic automatic sums and calculations. Week 5: Computer safety - avoiding malicious people, websites, and false information. Using PowerPoint to make presentations. NB. The course starting 11/01/20 is split into two "courses" - the 1 week course available now is for initial bookings, followed by a 4 week block after in-person/online safety assessments have been made.
