What we'll do
We have a large outside area where we like to play group games of rounders, football, table tennis, tag and lots more activities like den building, gardening and outdoor cooking. Following the children’s lead we set up creative activities such as scratch art, reflective pattern prints, tee shirt printing and collaging. The children are included in food preparation each day- this can be preparing the salad or making puddings such as fruit salads, baking biscuits, making homemade lemonade or crumbles using the fruit that they pick in our garden. There are lots of books and board games available throughout the day, with Uno and chess being the favourites- as the children always win against the staff! We have talent shows and obstacle courses and trips out. As we are surrounded by such a luscious local environment, the children are encouraged to go on daily walks, climbing trees, scavenger hunts or playing at the park- we feel this is a huge benefit to not only their physical development but it also has a positive impact on their mental health and social skills. Wherever possible we try to accommodate all of the children's suggestions for activities and they are always encouraged to offer their ideas. The children are also encouraged to contribute to the local community by engaging in activities such as helping at the food club, litter picking, making cards and taking them out to local care homes. The children get to try out lots of new activities, make new friends and meet up with old friends in a safe , fun and friendly environment.
About your mentor
Family Action
Building Stronger Families
Family Action is an award-winning national charity working from the heart of local communities across England and Wales. We’ve been supporting people through change, challenge and crisis for over 150 years. We believe family is the key to positive futures, for individuals and communities. We believe there’s no right way to be a family, it’s relationships that matter. We know first-hand that our early experiences of family stay with us, for better or worse. That’s why, whatever’s going on in your family, we’re here for you. From baby bumps to bumps in the road, we’re here for every age and stage of life. Putting food on the table with our FOOD Club and National School Breakfast programmes, giving new families the best start through perinatal, parenting and post-adoption support, finding lost confidence through our wellbeing and counselling services. Wherever we’re needed, our Family Action support workers get right alongside people: protecting children, supporting young people and offering direct, practical help to families. Our national, free FamilyLine is open to anyone feeling overwhelmed with any family-related issue. We all have our own family stories. Some are tougher than others. But the story of today doesn’t have to be the story of tomorrow, for any of us. Family is a doing word. Together, we change lives.
