Learn how to use clay to sculpt your creations and cast them into a final piece. This workshop introduces participants to the process of using clay to sculpt sculptures and using silicone and Jesmonite to cast them into a final piece. We will also explore using Jesmonite with pre-made moulds and will develop a variety of casting techniques. Exploring a variety of artistic techniques, Emma will be leading participants through creative ways of building sculpture, whilst using specialist skills such as moulding and casting. Using pre-made moulds, different techniques used to create swirly patterns, abstract shapes and bright colours will be explored. Participants will take away their own sculptures cast in Jesmonite, along with coasters or candle holders which they decorate in their own way. The wellbeing of our young people is really important to us and time outdoors is a key part of that. With this in mind, where possible a short walk or time outdoors will be incorporated into the workshop days. This will be supervised by the staff running the workshops and will also be weather dependent. Please ensure your child has a coat and sensible footwear! If your booking is made within 72 hours of the workshop, we may not be able to accommodate specific dietary requirements. Please get in touch with the library location for the workshop to discuss options. Please note that whilst we welcome all young people, our staff are not specifically SEND trained. This workshop is for 10-16 year olds only. If you feel your child requires additional support in the form of adult attendance in order to access this workshop, contact us by emailing katie.puls@suffolklibraries.co.uk. Mon 30 Dec 2024 09:45 - 15:30 A Year in a Box Workshop with Chris James Join local poet, author and musician Chris James for this free creative workshop for 10-16 year olds! Create and decorate your own memory box for the year ahead with a window for each season. During our workshop we'll each create a memory box for the year ahead, decorating the sides with a window on each season. Using collage and paper cut out techniques, we'll create beautiful outdoor scenes. We'll decorate the lid with a decorative numerals '2025.' Inside the box we'll make a reading journal so we can list books we have read and would like to read in 2025. We'll list our new year's resolutions, and then finally write a poem about the year that's gone, or the year ahead (or both if there's time). Everyone can take their box home, and will be encouraged to keep it on display to reflect the changing seasons, then use it to store treasures they collect over the year, from pinecones and feathers, to pictures and postcards. Tue 31 Dec 2024 09:45 - 15:30 Digital Billboards Workshop with Michelle Brace Join digital artist Michelle Brace for this free creative workshop for 10-16 year olds and create your own digital billboard using text, collage materials and visual mixing techniques! Through a hands-on process of building up a colourful collage using images, text, acrylic markers and collage papers you will create a design for your billboard that can be re-mixed and added to in Procreate on the iPad (supplied for use in the workshop). Your digital design will be uploaded into a mock-up app so that you can see your work displayed, in its full creative glory, in its street location (think bus stop display or large-scale advertising hoarding). You can expect to come away from the day with skills in digital mixing, editing and an experience of working with layers and layer masks but, if you prefer just to collage, that is awesome too. You will still be able to create your own digital billboard! The session will include a playful exploration of words and text so that, if you like, you can get your message out there along with your awesome creativity via your billboard. Your digital designs will be shared digitally after the workshop and an A4 printed copy of your digital billboard will be given to you to take home. Michelle Brace
Digital artist and visual mixer
I describe my work as digital mixed media. I use all kinds of things as visual source material including moving image, natural materials, collage, mark making, text and photographic textures to build colourful visual compositions. I've recently been collaborating with dancers, musicians and other visual artists to make studio based work and work for live performance and projection. I often work with communities producing and facilitating projects and have a current emphasis on developing my creative practice to support mental health and well-being.
