A SUMMARY
Come wander through the stories and history of East and West Sussex. Wherever you go, town and countryside, there are memories, magic and mystery lying just out of sight... and Sussex has as much folklore and myth as any place. I'll share some stories old and new from across the county, as well as facts behind them and true life tales of people who made their lives here. If you live locally, find out about the landscape outside your door; and if you're just interested, come enjoy! A feast of folklore and info for anyone interested in local history, heritage and beliefs; including virtual visits to sites and landmarks, through photos and more. We'll need five bookings minimum to go ahead. Once you book, I'll wait 'til we have enough before confirming the session. If you're interested, please tell your friends. See you soon!
About your mentor
Jonathan Mason
Storyteller, historian and enthusiasm-sharer!
As a professional storyteller for five years, I am fascinated by the connections between stories and places. I think wherever you live, you deserve to know the history of the area and the stories people have told about it - and one of my favorite things is to give people a sense of of magic and meaning in their surroundings. Having lived in Brighton for 16 years, I've therefore loved learning as much about local folklore and history as I can - and I love sharing that view of the world from the ground up. I have a Masters degree in Contemporary History and have completed a professional course from the Ashmolean Museum in Telling for Heritage. I lead guided walks and treasure hunts at many sites around Sussex, sharing stories and history, and have told Sussex folk tales at schools for children of all ages. Past bookings and participants have said: "He inspired the children with his oral storytelling about legendary creatures and characters of Old Sussex... His excited intonation and excellent timing held the children’s attention for the whole half hour and they asked questions about the characters, settings and events. We can recommend his skills and enthusiasm for story telling sessions.” Hertford Infant School “Jon came to Hangleton Primary during our Book week and completely entranced the children with oral storytelling of universal themes of bravery, journey and love. He skilfully wove the children’s recent learning into exciting stories from Old Sussex and beyond and has inspired some amazing storytelling and story writing across the school." - Hangleton Primary School “Thank you Jon for a really wonderful performance tonight. You really brought those stories to life and it made me wonder why we don’t all know these stories of this beautiful land better. I want to go and visit those places now!” – Umi Sinha, Guesthouse Storytellers, Newhaven
