A SUMMARY
This is an 8-week secular and evidence-based Woodland Mindfulness Course (MBSR/MBCT), teaching mindfulness techniques in weekly 2-hour sessions in a beautiful woodland setting. Throughout the course, participants will be given the opportunity to learn a combination of traditional meditation techniques, cognitive behavioural therapy exercises, and chi gong, as well as learning about the physiology of the brain and the effects that stress has on the body and mind. Activities are based around an open fire and followed up with an opportunity to talk about experiences. Some of the practices are done in a lying position but can be adapted to suit individual needs. All activities are invitational. Practicing mindfulness in a woodland setting can help to enhance our sensory skills through immersion in nature. Gently learning to pay attention to ourselves as well as our environment can help deepen our sense of connectedness with the natural world as well as ourselves. Participants will learn simple meditation practices to help become more aware of what is happening with-in everyday experiences, therefore more able to manage thoughts, emotions and body sensations effectively. The first half of the course will be spent looking at learning skills to develop an awareness of body sensations, feelings, and thoughts, and in the second half, we will learn how to incorporate these skills into our everyday lives. Mindfulness practice is simple yet powerful as it can interrupt the habit of getting lost in thoughts. This practice is the foundation of mindfulness where you will learn to observe and train your attention away from stressful thought patterns which can improve your health and well-being. The 8-week format is fundamental to start forming new healthy habits, the repetition of showing up each week and building a meditation practice over a number of weeks, in a group environment, provides an opportunity to build strong foundations for the future of your health and wellbeing. Making this commitment to yourself is a great gift. On completion of the 8-week course, it may be easier to cultivate new skillful choices when faced with difficult situations and stress levels as you become more familiar applying mindfulness skills to different areas of everyday living.Practicing mindfulness in a woodland setting can help to enhance our sensory skills through immersion in nature. About your mentor
Project Rewild
Led by Polly Palmer
I've been practicing Mindfulness Meditation for the last 5 years. When I was introduced to the practice I was dealing with a lot of stress and lowered mood. Mindfulness gave me techniques to handle my stress in a more workable way. Having a Mindfulness practice will not stop bad things happening to you, or give you everlasting happiness, but what I will say is, with practice, it helped me navigate stress and difficulties more skilfully with a clearer frame of mind which also helped me make the transition through these periods smoother and quicker. I completed my mindfulness teacher training with the NHS at the Sussex Mindfulness Centre in Brighton (SMC). I chose to train at SMC as it recognised as one of the top three mindfulness training centres in the country. I work in collaboration with Project Rewild (CIC) running secular based 8-week woodland mindfulness courses in Hastings throughout the year. I teach basic mindfulness techniques to children in a nourishing woodland environment. I also work directly with Luke Funnell, founder of Project Rewild. Together we co-run Rewilding and Mindfulness day courses for adults. I have a passion for bringing Mindfulness practice into nature and I'm committed to working towards making mindfulness practices available for all who want to learn them.
