What we'll do
There are two options for this Nordic Health Walk around Wickham Market. If you are feeling energetic, why not join our longer walk of 4.25 miles which will start at 9.30am? Alternatively, you could join us at 12.30pm for a short walk of less than 2 miles. For the longer walk we’ll walk across the playing field and down a quiet lane, across field margins and along farm tracks, heading south west to Byng Brook. Byng Lane brings us to Pettistree village, where we’ll stop briefly at the church (not open). We’ll cross the B1438 then continue across fields (possibly a bit muddy) and wide grassy tracks down into the Deben valley. From Spring Lane a footpath takes us up the field edge to emerge at the Pightle behind All Saints Church. This is a lovely church to visit at the end of our walk in the village centre near the car park. For the shorter walk we’ll head out across the playing field and along a quiet lane to Pettistree village, through the churchyard and across several fields on wide tracks to the bottom of the village in the Deben Valley. From Spring Lane a footpath takes us uphill to emerge behind the church in the village centre. For both walks we will meet in the Percy Mason car park, off Wickham Market square (The Hill) IP13 0QS. The car park entrance is on the south side between Bellissima Beauty and East Anglian Traditional Art Centre (the car park sign is obscured). Parking in the Percy Mason car park costs £2 for 4 hours (cash or Ringo parking App). There’s an hourly bus service (63/64) Ipswich/ Woodbridge/ Saxmundham/Leiston/ Aldeburgh to Wickham Market centre. There are public toilets in the Percy Mason car park, but sometimes they are locked. Alternatively in Library/ Community rooms next to Medical Centre near the church. (Allow 10 minutes to get there and back). For lunch either before or after your walk there are various options including Café 46 next to the car park, the Tea Pot tea rooms on the High Street nearby or Fish and Chips at Flaming Fryer in the High Street near the church.

About Nordic Health Walks
The aim of these monthly Nordic Walks is to get people together, explore different locations within Suffolk and South Norfolk and make new friends whilst practising the Nordic Walking technique. Walks are held on different days, different times and in different places with the hope that everyone will be able to attend at least once in a while. The walks are run for charity, with a £3 donation collected per person per walk. Some of the walks are planned and led by Charlotte and others are planned and led by members of the group. As Charlotte is not always able to walk and risk assess the route before the date, anyone coming on a Health Walk needs to be aware that they do so at their own risk! Charlotte leads a warm up and a cool down at the end of each walk and an opportunity is built in for a coffee or lunch before or after the walk. The walks tend to be 3-4 miles in length with a shorter route option for those who want to come but not walk as far. Please note that you need to be familiar with the Nordic Walking technique in order to come on a Nordic Health Walk. Poles may be borrowed if you don’t have your own.

About Nordic Walking
Nordic Walking uses specially designed poles to enhance your natural walking experience. With a technique that is similar to the upper body action of classic cross-country skiing, Nordic Walking is a whole body exercise that can be enjoyed at many levels, from walking for health to athletic Nordic running. More than 10 million people globally enjoy this outdoor activity all year round. Nordic Walking combines the simplicity and accessibility of walking with simultaneous core and upper body conditioning similar to Nordic skiing. The result is a full body workout, which means that you: • burn up to 46% more calories compared to walking without poles • release tension in the neck and shoulders • improve your posture and gait • strengthen your back and abdominal muscles • reduce the impact on the joints And because Nordic Walking doesn’t feel like hard work, you’ll be happy to walk further and for longer.
