The winter programme will be fully focused around fitness and nutrition alongside rewarding activities for the young people such as music, cricket, football and so on. The programme will consist of daily physical sessions where young people will play sports; football, Cricket with their peers in a safe and rewarding environment. The sports activity will alternate each day alongside fitness workouts, strength and conditioning to further enhance young peoples body and mind. The Fitness sessions at the winter programme will support young people by the qualified staff on fitness instructing to improve their fitness and wellbeing levels and provide information on nutritional advice they can use to adjust their lifestyle. The programme will empower young people by developing their personal skills and character to inspire them to engage in purposeful activities, gain confidence and better themselves. The project will support their mental well –being through peer and social interaction, and the physical activity will also bring mental health benefits -it will help to reduce weight and control diet, help with self-esteem and pride in themselves. The programme will bring enjoyment through socialising with young people diverse backgrounds within Newham, as they will have creative and interactive activities to break ice and have discussion with others. This will work towards strong, resilient and safe communities as the programme will empower young people by developing their personal skills and character to inspire them to engage in purposeful activities, gain confidence and better themselves under a safe environment. On a daily basis, we will spend 15 minutes time on nutritional education where our young people will be conversed into various topics on nutrition to create better health eating and enable them to incorporate it better in their lifestyle once winter programme is completed. On the end of each week ending, parents and guardians will be given advice and guidelines on how to identify, recognize and source nutritious good on low cost budget. Brief Training will be given once a week in groups during drop-offs and pick-ups to educate parents on recognizing the nutritional values and what elements to reduce intake as a family. This will create a greater understanding on why eating well leads to better health. They will be provided leaflets on Nutrition. The project will contribute to local cohesion among diverse communities, especially for young people who can take full part in safe and positive environment and stay away from negative and harmful environment. The winter programme will end with a celebration day for the young people to celebrate their achievement for a end of year party. A 6-day rota will be provided to parents in advance to give them a clear insight of all the activities to take place in the winter programme.
About your mentors
Barnfield Education (BEP Education)
Educating the future today
Barnfield Education (BEP Education) started in March 2015 as a community education project. The main focus of BEP is to cater for the academic, social, emotional and physical well-being of children and young people (CYP) particularly in deprived communities. We achieve this by ensuring that students receive additional academic support to help them develop competence/excellence in the core subjects of the National Curriculum (Maths, English and Science), through intensive Saturday School tuition and extra-curricular activities including the delivery of government Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme. The project also provides SATs, GCSE and A-Level Exams Preparatory Classes and GCSE and A-Level Revision Workshops. We help children and young people build on the learning they receive in mainstream schools and further prepare them for formal National assessments. BEP increases students' abilities to undertake school and homework requirements and enhance numeracy and literacy skills. It also provides opportunity for parents to support their children’s education, understand education pathways, help build parenting skills and contribute to social inclusion. Beneficiaries have access to extra after-school teaching in small groups (ratio 10:1) that help them develop competences in core subjects of the National Curriculum – Maths, English and Science, support for primary school students at critical stages particularly Year 2 and Year 6 to fully equip and prepare them for SATs exams before progressing into secondary school and also provide intensive teaching and one to one assistance to secondary school students with GCSE and A Level exams preparation.
