A summary
Puppets can be powerful allies in learning outdoors. They are playful, exciting and magical. They can support the development of language, imagination, social learning and creative play. They can be used to learn about the natural world and connect creatively with it. First we will explore the benefits of puppets and some simple ways they can be introuduced into sessions. There will then be a practical session of making, with a focus on using wool and wet and needle felt methods.
About your mentors
Lauren Kinnersley
Freelance Forest School Leader
I started out as a health professional in the NHS with a focus on health promotion, until I discovered Forest School in 2005. I qualified as a level 3 Forest School Leader in 2006, and left the NHS in 2010 to focus on working with children outdoors. In 2012 I completed the Steiner Teacher training, and I take a lot of inspiration from the Steiner Waldorf pedagogy into my work. The training unlocked my own creativity, sadly not encouraged in my own education. It has led me to adventures in storytelling, using and making puppets and singing and music. I am especially interested in working creatively outdoors with young people of all ages and abilities. Current work included; working with children living in a disadvantaged area experiencing social, emotional and mental health challenges; sensory explorations outdoors with young people in a SEND school; working with home educating families; delivering forest school to children age 3 -4 years at Sherwood Playgroup. I am especially interested in the therapeutic impact of time outdoors and of play, and in October 2024 I am beginning a Postgraduate Certificate in Therapeutic Play, the first step in training as a play therapist.
