Library: Great Cornard Library, Head Lane, Sudbury CO10 0JU 31 March: Create Your Own CD and Cover Art with Musical Duo Emma Denby and Carl Cole Students will work in groups of up to 7 to create their own music to practice and record onto a CD. The day will be fluid with time for brainstorming, practicing, recording and decorating their album covers so that everyone has enough time to complete their projects. The project would involve working with others to create music, this music could be just instruments, or it could be a cappella singing, it could even be something quite abstract like a soundtrack to a horror film! Using examples of cover art that would be brought in to show the participants, we would use drawing and painting techniques to then produce their own cover art. For this, they don't have to work in groups, but they can if they want to keep their 'band aesthetic' together. We would use techniques like watercolour backgrounds, graffiti style text, posca pens for bold colours, and collage materials for layering and finding inspiration. Morning: Introductions Brief for the day & questions Instrument examples and music workshop Participants put into groups and brainstorm! Then practice! Before lunch - think about their group, their genre and what their band might be called! Afternoon: Have a look around the library to find art inspiration Groups begin to record over the afternoon When not recording, participants can be working on their album covers with Emma Audio ripped onto CDs to put inside their album case. About Emma and Carl: Based in Yorkshire, Emma Denby is a neurodiverse artist specialising in sculpture, painting and installation. Working collaboratively and solo to create socially engaged projects, her practice is motivated by playfulness and celebrates curiosity. Carl Cole is a Musician, Composer and Educator based in Norwich, UK. He has performed across the UK on tour and at festivals with a range of artists in a variety of contexts. He has also delivered sound and music for films, TV and other media, with clients such as Mazda, Barclays, ITV and the United Nations Business Council. Following on from this work, Carl is currently delivering music and sound for a range of audio-visual art installations which have been presented at leading UK arts festivals. 10 April: The Power of Storytelling with Theatre Maker Sian Burford-Thomas This workshop is designed to explore the power of our voices, to get young people thinking about what they are passionate about, via the medium of stories. A very adaptable workshop in terms of the interests of the group Stories have power – the power to entertain, to educate, to challenge and to change. Join us to celebrate your power, your voice and to tell stories that matter to YOU. In this workshop we’ll be tapping into our ideas, imaginations and desire for change, all through storytelling. So, what is it you want to say? We’ll be using theatre making techniques to get us thinking, but there’ll be no pressure to perform in front of others if you don’t want to. You can share back your story through performance, words or images, and you’ll get to take home our storytelling device, enabling you to reimagine your ideas again and again. Come and enjoy a creative day where your ideas matter! About Sian: Sian is dedicated to working in community-led participatory theatre, and has run numerous youth theatres, community art projects, school residencies, digital participation projects and more. She was responsible for family programming at The New Wolsey Theatre for over 5 years. As well as now running Stomping Ground Theatre, Sian is currently Lead Practitioner for the Mercury Theatre Young Company.
