A summary
We would like to offer an introductory short course learning British sign language (BSL). BSL is the language of the Deaf community. BSL is a visual-gestural language with its own vocabulary, structure and grammar which is different from English. Our aim is to learn signs that are relevant to being outdoors in nature, in a woodland environment, with family, friends, and children. We hope to develop a short course further on in the year, so that we may learn new signs, repeat and practice the signs we have previously covered. It is our wish as forest school educators, as a parent and as friends to be able to communicate better with the deaf community by learning signs. We will be shown and learn basic communication signs, how to ask questions, and signs we would use in the natural environment. We want to learn signs that are relevant to our immediate environment, to family, friends, the rhythm of the year and Mother Nature. The training will take place in beautiful ancient Woodland of Lymley Woods in East Sussex. Our guide will be an experienced BSL trainer with an interrupter. We look forward to learning new signs together in the woods. Please get in touch if you wish for any further information.
About your mentors
Lorna Hendley
A teacher & mum who knows how to have fun!
I originally worked as a learning support assistant in mainstream school and found myself drawn to younger children. I fell in love with the Waldorf / Steiner education from the moment I walked through the Steiner Kindergarten door. I completed my Waldorf / Steiner early years teacher training alongside working as an assistant at Michael Hall Steiner school. I became a teacher and started a kindergarten with a new group of children and families. I was fortunate to have several happy years there before starting my own family. I am now a busy home maker and mother to three young children. Five years ago I started Kindergarten Magic, my indoor Steiner inspired parent and child and kindergarten for home educated families and children of pre school age. Alongside this, I started up a Steiner inspired outdoor parent and child group, called Woodland Magic. I wanted to embrace my Forest school leader qualification and felt that Waldorf/Steiner education ties in beautifully with our natural environment. I have been running for the past 3 years at the wonderful Lymley Woods. Lymley Tribe nature club has been running for two years. This is a wonderful opportunity for children aged 5-12 years to just be kids in nature. They enjoy playing, creating, exploring, time on the adventure ropes, making fire, fostering friendships & experiencing the yearly rhythm of the year. In the summer months we run after school 3.30-5.30pm on a Tuesday and Sept - June once a month on a Saturday 2-4pm. Throughout the year I offer festivals, celebrations and family such as Easter and Lantern walk at Martinmas.     It is my aim to reconnect families with nature, to help foster a nature connection whilst having fun and creating magic and wonder for both the child and the parent. Over the past year I have ran children's birthdays parties, from 3 to 9 years of age. The party’s have been in the woods, in the family home or in a village hall. I offer a tailor made, magical & fun experience for this special occasion. Creating magic and wonder is a key component to everything I try to do. It is my true hope that it reaches out to the whole family ?

Directions & Parking
Directions: From Mayfield turn right/ from Five Ashes turn left onto Horleigh Green Road for 1 mile. Look out for a narrow steep road on the right on a left hand bend, and a farmhouse on the corner. This is Argos Hill Road. From Crowborough/ Rotherfield go through Rotherfield village passing the Kings Arms pub on the left. Take the forth left down the hill onto Five Ashes Road. After 1 mile, look out for Argos Hill left on the bend however you cannot turn here left here as it is too sharp. Taking care, turn around in the next left.... Fir Toll Road and then Argos Hill Road will be on your right. It has access only sign at top. Watch out for tractors as it is a narrow road. 300 yards down Argos Hill Road, passing a big barn and farm yard on right then there is a little parking spot on the left opposite Brook Farm House. This is Lymley Wood car park. From Mark Cross you can turn onto Argos Hill Road, from Argos Hill Lane however it is rather bumpy in places and narrow. You drive all the way down the hill and the car park is on the right opposite Brook Farm House. Parking: Please park in the car park and not on the lane anywhere. The car park has one entry/exit and we all have to park close together to fit in, please don’t leave space for other cars to get out, we have to block each other in. Therefore if you have to leave early or promptly after the session, please be one of the last to arrive. I will have a car parking Marshall to guide you.
