A summary
A simple technique using bramble strands to make a temporary foraging basket, lined with leaves.. Suitable activity to do with children (Year 4 and above) over 2 sessions. Session 1. Collect and de-thorn 17 bramble strands, some medium thick, some finer strands. De-thorning is done either with a tin can with a hole in the base, or with a thick glove ( like a welding glove). Session 2. Arrange the base sticks in an overlapping pattern, to form an evenly spaced lattice or grid. Using the finer strands weave around the base (behind one in front of one) and gently bend up the lattice sticks to form the sides. Continue weaving behind one in front of one. When one strand finishes start another by crossing it over the top of the the existing weaver behind a stake. leave the ends sticking out on the outside, to be trimmed later. Push down gently on the rows of waving to close up gaps. Once the basket is the required height tuck the end of the last weaver into the row below. You can then finish off with a simple border or just trim off the stakes. Bend your final 2 bramble strands through the weave on either side to form a handle. Line your basket with bramble leaves and you are ready to go gathering berries. We will condense the 2 sessions into 2 hours, 10.30-12.30pm on Sunday May 21st, with the option to stay on to finish
