A SUMMARY
GCSE Art is a demanding course. It requires the student to have not only a high level of skill in drawing and painting but the ability to develop their own ideas. They are asked to research the work of other artists and to apply and transfer techniques and concepts to their own work. I have one remaining place in my Tuesday afternoon group. To benefit from the reduced price and to book on for this group for the remainder of the winter term, please select the option. Students can often benefit from regular, personalised input in order to maintain their confidence and to keep up with the required coursework. I also offer individual, one to one sessions for £35. Please message me using the Contact Mentor button to discuss any alternative arrangements. Many students choose art because they love it but then find that they don't love doing the GCSE. My objective is to help them to navigate the demands of the curriculum to achieve a high grade without losing their joy and original passion for art. Sometimes I see a student with great ideas and enthusiasm but who lacks the foundational skills of realistic drawing to successfully communicate and demonstrate their visual ideas. Therefore, in assessment and marking they may not achieve the grades deserved for their originality. This can have a detrimental effect on their confidence and self-esteem. I enjoy working with students to improve their core skills and show them practical techniques that can have an immediate positive benefit on their work. Conversely, a student with a high level of skill may struggle to come up with original and appropriate ideas because they do not know how to combine ideas or explore possible outcomes or techniques. Sometimes students have a fear of experimenting and taking risks. I enjoy working with these students to encourage and free up their creativity. Whatever stage you are on the course, I will be happy to support you.
About your mentor
Annabel Kapp
When your mentor provides a strapline it will go here
I am a practicing artist making and selling my own paintings and drawings. I have extensive teaching experience including cover teaching for art GCSE as well as teaching one to one and private groups of children and adults at all levels from beginner to A level. I have taught realistic drawing skills using Betty Edward's methods 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain' for many years, having worked with her in the US. Her methods are very effective and underpin my teaching practice. They confirm my long held belief that virtually anyone can learn to draw realistically when they are taught the perceptual skills of looking. I am passionate about empowering people to be able to draw well and love seeing the confidence that a drawing can bring to a student. Many GCSE art courses assume most of these skills have been taught or picked up previously and focus instead on ideas, research or experimentation. Sadly many art teachers are unable to teach these skills effectively. My own artistic practice and love of drawing and painting directly informs my teaching.
