A SUMMARY
Philosophical reflection helps children to improve their communication and debating skills, honing their persuasive powers and their ability to solve problems. We will start our sessions with role play to raise thought provoking questions and discuss them openly. Everyone will be encouraged to express their opinions by explaining the reasons for their thoughts. The discussion will then follow the path of these questions. I will begin the first session with a brief introduction to philosophy and philosophical methods. Then we will start role play by setting out a basic scenario which the children can discuss and judge – but they have to give a reason for every judgement. We will then slightly alter the scenario a few times and see how this changes the opinions of the children about what is going on. The focus is on encouraging the children to think critically and to see that things are not always as they seem at first glance and why careful questioning makes all the difference. It is about exchanging ideas about what feels right and wrong to them. The children will see that their own ideas have value as well as the ideas of others, and that there is not always just one simple ‘right´ way to look at things and that other opinions should be respected. The sessions will help the children to gain the confidence to ask questions, explore and explain ideas and learn through discussion. Along the way we will learn about history and some famous philosophers and their reasoning. We will have a break half way through each session and I would like to offer the children a snack (hot chocolate, fruit, biscuits…). Please let me know if your children have any allergies or special dietary requirements. I could also run a similar block of sessions for older or younger children. Please let me know if you are interested.
