A summary
I offer Yoga to Reconnect a weekly community based therapeutic somatic yoga practice, where you are invited to explore bodily sensations as you move through shapes. Focussing on reconnecting with or building on your felt sense (interoception) the practice supports being in the present moment and offers choice on how you take part. During the session you will be invited to explore yoga forms and movements at your own pace. The emphasis is not on the appearance of the yoga forms, or “doing it right,” but rather tuning into the felt-sensations of your body, and making choices about how you choose to move. Increasingly, movement based practices are evidenced as beneficial in the recovery from mental distress. In particular somatic practices that focus awareness on body sensation have been shown to improve interoceptive awareness, increase awareness of emotional states and an increased ability to regulate emotional distress (Bornemann et al., 2015, p.11, Farb et al., 2015). Improved interoceptive awareness through yoga practices is evidenced as playing an important role in the bodies recovery from trauma responses (Caplan et al., 2013, Van der Kolk et al., 2014, West et al., 2017). Despite this many traditional approaches in the treatment of trauma are disembodied (Pert, 1999, Emerson, 2015). Guided by trauma informed research Yoga to Reconnect seeks to create a space to support you in reconnecting with your somatic self.
About your mentor
Dr Rebecca Devereux
Connecting self with the somatic.
Rebecca Devereux founder of Somatic Sense Brighton offers therapeutic movement interventions for people who have experienced complex and single incident trauma. With a background in psychology and social work my training in psychology and social work began primarily in western based ‘top-down’ approaches to human distress. While my involvement with the world of movement from a young age drew my curiosity towards the neuroscience supporting people through movement based practices. Following my initial training in Hatha and Vinyasa flow I decided to specialise in trauma sensitive approaches to supporting trauma experiences and completed a 300 hour certificate in Trauma Center, Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) with the Centre for Trauma and Embodiment. TCTSY is an empirically validated, clinical intervention for complex trauma or chronic, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) developed by the Center for Trauma and Embodiment at Justice Resource Institute. TCTSY earned inclusion in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) database published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in the United States. It was developed on understandings of neuroscience, attachment theory and trauma theory specifically for people who experience complex trauma. I am also currently in my second year of training in Somatic Experiencing, a pioneering body oriented approach to relieving the physical, psychological, emotional and physiological effects of acute and chronic stress and PTSD with SOS Internationale. I specialise in working with people who experience emotional dysregulation, dissociation, body dysmorphia, substance use and self-injurious behaviours. I have been teaching trauma informed yoga since 2019 and have facilitated spaces for many charities and community organisations working with those who have experienced trauma.
