A summary
Iyengar yoga classes teach the yoga asanas with the attention to detail and alignment and in depth knowledge of the asanas that has come about from Guruji BKS Iyengar's lifelong dedication to his subject. As a student you will first learn the basic shapes of the asanas and gradually begin to understand the finer details and refinements. Yoga is about exploring the embodiment - the connection of the mind, body and breath that is within us all. You will feel both the physical and mental benefits of the practice and will go home feeling that you have done some good work! Classes are in Forest Row and Horsted Keynes.
About your mentor
Sarah Delfas
Certified Iyengar yoga teacher since 2002
I discovered Iyengar Yoga in 1990 whilst studying Classics at university; I happened upon a class taught by a man called Kofi Busia and was hooked. It took me a while to realise that Kofi was a student of BKS Iyengar, the legendary yogi who brought yoga to the West, and was in fact one of Iyengar's first pupils in the UK. I qualified as an Iyengar yoga teacher in 2002 (taking 5 years over the training and having our first two children during the process). Iyengar yoga teacher training requires you to have attended regular Iyengar classes for at least 3 years before even beginning to learn to teach and involves a mentoring process over at least 3 more years. After that we attend regular professional development days and take more assessments over the years to progress and develop as teachers. I attend regular classes and workshops with senior Iyengar teachers from the UK and India and have studied at the RIMYI Institute in Pune with the Iyengars. I now hold a Level 3 certificate and am a mentor to Iyengar students training to become teachers. I teach adults and young people and welcome students of all levels and ability. Yoga is for everyone and I enjoy bringing it to beginners as much as to more advanced students. I am indebted to the profound work of BKS Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar and now Prashant and Abhijata Iyengar who share their knowledge and experience with an infinite generosity that has given us a practice of yoga that is safe and available to all. Huge gratitude also to Rajiv Chanchani whose classes have been transformative and an invaluable companion to those of Prashantji. The journey into each asana is endless and there is always more to refine and more to discover. I sustain a regular practice and exploring the connections within the asana, between the asanas, between the mind, the body and the breath, with the mind, body and breath, leads me never to tire of yoga practice or teaching. I live in Sussex with my husband and 4 children and motherhood and yoga have inevitably led to my teaching yoga to children and young adults. I am a founding member of Iyengar Yoga UK's Children, Young Adults and Families Committee which works to ensure that we are bringing Iyengar yoga to these age groups and to help teachers to develop their teaching skills for this. I aim to teach my yoga classes in the spirit of "friendliness, compassion, gladness and joy" as in Patanjali's Yoga Sutra1.33.
