A summary
The Shaw Method of Swimming, also known as the Art of Swimming, teaches you to swim with ease, grace, and power, while having fun! The teacher joins the student in the water and, as in Alexander Technique lessons, provides clear, hands-on guidance along with demonstrations and verbal instructions. The clear, logical, and simple progressions build confidence and comfort so that students learn to move in the water with awareness, efficiency, and ease. I offer 1:1 lessons and small group based lessons for adults and young people. Please message me to express your interest. The stroke being taught is taught in small steps over a number of lessons, breaking down the stroke into its parts. The whole stroke is brought together at the end of the period of lessons. The number of lessons needed for learning a stroke vary according to client needs, but generally average at 5 for completing a single stroke. I can teach all levels of swimmer, including non-swimmer. I can also work with people that have a fear of water, but want to take a gentle step towards building water confidence. Taking an individual tailored approach to working with you to take that first step towards being in a pool. I am currently able to offer: Lessons in clients own pool I am developing: I am currently setting up usage of other pools to be able to teach in.

Swim, Enjoy, Relax
I am teacher and work at school in Forest Row. I have been teaching for 6 years and enjoy working in this environment (I have an enhanced DBS, and first aid at work certification). I have in the past also worked as a fencing coach, and had the opportunity to teach in a number of school and club settings. I love being in water, and when I met Stephen Shaw, a parent of a child in my previous class (in Somerset), he introduced me the 'art of swimming'. I undertook a front crawl workshop with Stephen, and was immediately blown away with how easy and efficant front crawl can be. The approach to teaching and learning this way also aligned with my experiences of learning Bothmer Movement. The technique has been developed through Stevens work as a Alexander Technique teacher, and this connection to the human body and observation of good posture in the water, resonated with me. Stephen and I then worked together, to bring swimming to my previous school. I assisted in the pool, as he and another instructor taught my class to swim, using this method. He suggested that I should train to become a swimming teacher, and I couldn't agree more. To bring this form of swimming teaching into school and to individuals, made sense to me. I then undertook Shaw Method teacher training over a series of progressive teacher training workshops over a two year period (lockdown delayed). I was first taught how to swim all four strokes, as a pupil. Then after extensive personal practice, I moved upto the next stage of 'how to teach' the strokes. This was then followed by teaching a number of children and adults to build case studies, and also additional private mastery of the strokes. This was then finalised with an observed lesson. Reviews: "Dan taught our daughters, aged seven and nine, and totally transformed not just their ability to swim but their whole approach to being in the water. It was quite magical, frankly! Whereas both had been nervous before, a few lessons with Dan had both of them comfortably and safely enjoying themselves and kicking out into the deep that they'd only recently been terrified of. I can't recommend him highly enough." (Jules, parent to 7 and 9 year old) "Lovely manner, put me at ease during pre-talk, listened to my goals. In the water, tuned in and adjusted what he was requiring me to do according to my needs in real time – early on he identified we needed to go back a step, which was good. Equally, later on, we moved through next steps having given me time to try out a few times and having checked I felt happy to progress.Good encourager and reassurer - lovely to see him equally as thrilled as I with my small wins along the way." (Fiona, Adult learner)
