What we'll do
All day workshop in a beautiful rural setting You will make a flatback A5 book with blank or dot grid paper pages. You will fold sections, hand sew a book block, add endpapers, reinforce the spine and “case-in”, or cover your book in the Quarter bound style. You will learn (or revisit) beginning bookbinding techniques.  We will look at the importance of paper grain and how to fold, sew, and cover your book. All materials will be provided for your afternoon of making, including paper, board, various decorative papers, bookcloth, linen thread and adhesive to make your own uniquely designed book. Tools are provided for use on the day. A Wasted Kitchen lunch, coffee, tea and biscuits are included. You’ll take away your unique handbound book, new skills, and the satisfaction and well-being that the investment of time into working creatively brings. We’ll meet at Monkshill Refectory, a wonderful converted barn with views out to sea across the Swale estuary, close to Whitstable and Canterbury with peacocks roaming the farm buildings and kitchen garden. Images demonstrate the style of book only. Papers and materials will vary. Monkshill Refectory is a well ventilated venue with capacity for 20 socially distanced people, with up to 60 when restrictions are no longer required. Bindfulness workshops are limited to 8 places. About your mentor
Hope Fitzgerald
Bindfulness with
Bindfulness was established 2018, and brought my work making handbound books and leading bookbinding workshops together. I have been an artist for my entire adult life, working in a wide range of materials, including mixed media, installation work, photography, videography. I completed my MA in Fine Art in 2009 followed by a Post Graduate teaching qualification in 2012. This structured learning greatly enhanced my workshop delivery skills, which has been my preferred way of teaching ever since. I have worked with Primary and Secondary Schools in Kent and Essex as an artist since 2009, devising creative activities that were responsive to both curriculum aims and participants ideas. Books have always featured in my work - passing on my fascination with the book is always a pleasure.
