What we'll do
Learn the magic craft of blacksmithing. This 1 day course will immerse you into the basics of blacksmithing and it is the perfect introduction to forging steel. No previous experience is required. We will use steel and traditional techniques and you will learn all you need to get started. We will cover the different types of forges, fuel and tools for the beginner. I will also present important health and safety considerations to ensure that you start safely. The day is very much a hands-on experience. I like starting us off forging a leaf keyring because it encompasses a wide range of traditional techniques such as upsetting, drawing out, flattening, fullering, bending etc. not to mention the use of the hammer. You will come away with a forged leaf keyring and / or a blacksmith's knife. The forge is located at my home in Ardingly, tucked away in the beautiful Sussex countryside.
About your mentor
Ulysses de Diepold
When your mentor provides a strapline it will go here
I was an Osteopath for many years and discovered teaching. I took my Science PGCE at the University of Sussex in 2019 and I am now a Biology lecturer in Brighton and a maker. I stumbled into blacksmithing back in 2011 and learned the craft with several blacksmith friends and at Plumpton College and went on honing my skills step by step over the years. I started this course is because in 2018 a friend of mine asked me if I would teach his son some blacksmithing techniques and show him what the craft to help him decide if blacksmithing was the right thing for him before embarking on a course at Plumpton College. I really love helping people make things out of metal and I enjoy sharing information and seeing the results of my teaching.
