What we'll do
• Experienced youth theatre practitioners will lead, support and facilitate the group as they write, devise and finally perform. • Take part in unique theatre workshops that fuse together outdoor team building activities with drama and design, creating opportunities for individuals to socialise, collaborate and grow. • The Wilderness Wood site has excellent camping facilities in its’ beautiful 62 acres, providing the perfect location for the group to work, socialise and then relax, each day ending around the fire once the sun goes down.
About your mentors
Drama in the Woods
Forest youth theatre practitioners
Drawing on their professional experience (Sinead as a secondary school drama teacher and Emily as an actor) and their joint love of making theatre with young people, Drama in the Woods was formed in North London in 2013. It began as a small holiday project, to get children (including Sinead and Emily’s own children) outside to create exciting theatre in a beautiful, natural environment, with the woods as the stage and backdrop. This quickly evolved into regular projects and workshops, and became much more than the end theatre performance. Sinead and Emily found that the young people involved loved being in nature and exploring the woodland and so wonderful activities were researched and devised that allowed them to do this. Sinead and Emily and their growing Drama in the Woods team continue to fuse open-air theatre with forest school and outdoor activities to create a truly unique experience for all involved. And because they tailor the workshops to capture the imaginations of whatever group they are working with, even those who don't consider themselves to be performers, find themselves immersed in the process of creating a Drama in the Woods performance.
Sinead Hamilton
Theatre Practitioner and Youth Mentor
Sinead is co-founder of Drama in the Woods. She studied Contemporary Arts at Nottingham Trent University, and then completed a PGCE in Secondary Drama. She took on the role as Head of Drama and Dance at Stoke Newington Media Arts College, where she taught for 10 years. She left teaching to focus on her young family and to further her theatre practice, outside of the school environment. During this time, together with Emily, she formed Bare Bones, a community theatre company, and through Bare Bones, Drama in the Woods was created. For the past 12 years, Sinead and Emily have devised and delivered numerous theatre projects for people of all ages.
Emily Parker
Theatre Practitioner and Youth Mentor
Emily is co-founder of Drama in the Woods. She studied Dance at Middlesex University and Acting and Voice at The Central School of Speech and Drama. She worked as a theatre actor, singer and choreographer, before taking a departure from her acting career to focus on her young family. Alongside her work with Drama in the Woods, she continues to work as a singer, recording backing vocals for various artists, and singing lead vocals for Parker's Band, whose debut album was released in 2018. They will be back in the studio in the Spring.
Learning aims
Aim 1
• Drama in the Woods projects are like no other and aim to provide a safe, fun and supportive environment where young people can explore their own imaginations, share, create and develop ideas and see those ideas realised, all the while drawing inspiration and resources from the nature around them. The experience is fully immersive, with the surroundings alone promoting a sense of belonging, wellbeing and empowerment.
Aim 2
• Through this creative, shared experience, members will learn about themselves and each other, developing as individuals and as an ensemble when they perform together on the last day to family, friends and the local community in a promenade performance at dusk. All with the beautiful backdrop of Wilderness Wood.
