What we'll do
Better Start is a targeted programme for young people aged 16-19 (and up to 24 with additional needs) Their journey supports them to start working towards being employment ready, raise their aspirations, improve their mental health and understand options available to them. An example of the 12-week programme we mainly stick to is: Week1 – Realising your potential / thinking outside of the box / what skills don’t I know I have Week2 – What are your options (including educating parents): college courses, online learning, apprenticeships, traineeships, T-levels, social action/volunteering, employment. Week3 – Where to find opportunities: Indeed, local partners, The Pledge, CV monster, jobs boards, social media. Discuss social action ideas in their communities. Week4 – Creating high quality applications Week5 – Life skills, how to communicate/network, talking on the phone, working for an employer/ with colleagues, presenting yourself, acceptable/unacceptable behaviour Week6 – Mock Interview skills/ meeting employers/ work experience opportunities Week7 – Managing/ regulating your emotions. Understanding acceptance of feelings, recognising them and managing your reactions. Signpost to 1-2-1 mental health support as required Week8 – Budget planning / independent living (i.e. saving for driving lessons, personal development opportunities): where to access support, break down barriers and stereotypes (such as attending a community grocery or foodbank) Week9 – Cooking sessions, group communication, reducing waste Week10 – How can you help yourself and others (community, family, friends)? Becoming an important member of society. Delivery of social action ideas. Week 11 – Trip out as achievement Week 12 – Next step group planning and reflection During the programme young people are encouraged to carry out social action activities within their communities to improve the areas where they live, increase community spirit, and gain a sense of self-worth and accomplishment for making a difference. These activities are always led by the young people to maintain interest and build project management and leadership skills. Additional sessions are added in for young people to gain accreditation with an Emergency 1st Aid at Work course and a certificate in Mental Health 1st aid. Any other accredited and non-accredited courses will be recommended to young people depending on individual goals during or following on from the 12-week programme. Cancellation Policy
Free bookings do not require refunds but as places are limited, please cancel if you cannot attend so that your place can be offered to someone else.

My experience consists of a leisure activity, on a specific date(s), and therefore the 14-day ‘cooling off period’ under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 does not apply.
