"World Art" is an exciting and immersive class where students aged 9 to 15 can explore non-Western artistic movements and traditions from across the globe. This course takes a deep dive into the diverse artistic cultures and histories that have shaped art worldwide. By examining the works of influential artists, students will discover how art reflects cultural identities, beliefs, and histories. Through hands-on activities, they will create their own art inspired by global traditions.

What we'll do
Explore Non-Western Art Forms: Students will study various artistic traditions, including African masks, Indian miniature paintings, Chinese calligraphy, Japanese woodblock prints, Aboriginal dot painting, and Latin American murals. Understand Cultural Contexts: Students will learn how social, historical, and religious influences shape art across cultures and how these factors give art meaning in diverse contexts. Hands-on Artistic Creation: Students will have the opportunity to create their own artworks, experimenting with materials and techniques inspired by different non-Western traditions, such as batik, mosaic art, and indigenous textile patterns. Study Iconic Non-Western Artists: Students will examine the works of influential non-Western artists, such as: Yayoi Kusama (Japan) – Known for her polka dot installations and immersive environments. Ai Weiwei (China) – A contemporary artist who uses art to challenge political and social issues. El Anatsui (Ghana) – Renowned for his large-scale sculptures made from repurposed materials, blending tradition with modern commentary. Wifredo Lam (Cuba) – Fusing Afro-Cuban traditions with surrealism in his powerful, symbolic works. Emiliano Zapata (Mexico) – Known for his revolutionary murals that blend social and political themes with indigenous Mexican traditions. Alicia Henry (USA) – Creates works that explore themes of identity and the human condition, inspired by African and African-American cultural influences. Shirin Neshat (Iran) – A contemporary artist known for her photography and video installations exploring issues of gender, identity, and cultural division. Art and Identity: Students will learn how art reflects and communicates personal and collective identity. Themes of tradition, resistance, and modernisation will be explored as they relate to art movements from around the world.

Discover Diverse Artistic Movements: Students will explore non-Western artistic traditions, learning about movements and styles from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania, thus broadening their understanding of global art history.

Understand Cultural Influences on Art: Students will investigate how social, political, and religious factors influence artistic expression across cultures and understand the significance of art in these contexts.
Aim 3
Create Art Inspired by Global Traditions: Students will apply their knowledge by creating their own artworks inspired by the techniques, styles, and cultural themes of non-Western art, promoting creativity and cultural awareness.
