Short Breaks in the woods block mentored by Caroline Campbell

What we'll do

Short Breaks offers a form of 'respite' for families and young people who may exhibit challenging or restrictive behaviours or may have physical needs that may require extra support. We provide this service using the Forest School ethos and many of your clients attend frequently and regularly throughout the year. Often they enjoy the experience so much they stay with you for many years. The sessions offered are always well attended and form the basis of a very successful and rewarding business. This workshop shares the knowledge, opportunities and experience of our many years of delivery for those who may wish to expand their FS provision into this lucrative area. We will sit around the fire, with a set up similar to what we do in the woods. Here we can show you what we do and what it looks like. Experience the hammocks, and the environment and how they can promote inclusion and relaxation. We will tell you our story, how we began and how we have sustained our business and our plans for moving forward. We have some photos and can talk in detail about how we have included the children over the years and as they have got older the young adults they have become. Enabling them to become volunteer rangers. Describing how we actively encourage disabled adults to engage with our forest school, in order to create positive role models. We will describe how we have funded this, and of course you can ask us questions.

About your mentors

Caroline: When my nephew went to nursery in Denmark in the 1990's I saw the difference the environment makes. I have gone on to work in the early years and after school clubs promoting the benefits of the outdoors. I was overheard talking passionately at work about the outdoors and was asked to run an outdoors "risky play" project for disabled children. This developed naturally into work with adults as the children grew older. Now I promote inclusion with adults and children together. Simon: I began my FS journey in 2003 while working in the outdoor industry, and I have worked with alternative provision, mainstream schools, and additional needs. I am a level 4 forest school trainer working freelance, while delivering forest schools to children. I have qualifications in Forest School, beach schools, Social Forestry Level 3

As the Project Officer, I'm pleased to be organising the annual Forest School Association Conference. I am appearing as a Mentor on each workshop to give me oversight and allow me to help out on the day, I may not actually be on your workshop.

Here is our journey from discovering forest schools in Denmark in the 1990’s to its influence on outdoor pursuits, to running a project outdoors to embracing the forest school ethos in our short break service for disabled children. To working with the police on anti-knife projects with children at risk and wellbeing projects in the woods for childcare settings. Then where we are going next.
