What we'll do
Ujhasuma Africa delivers inclusive, hands-on workshops that combine African music, dance, storytelling, and cultural learning for children aged 4–16, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Our sessions are designed to be engaging, sensory-rich, and adaptable, enabling children of all abilities to participate, express themselves, and develop confidence in a supportive environment. Children explore a range of African instruments including djembes, talking drums, and balafons (African wooden xylophones). These instruments are highly accessible and provide immediate sensory feedback through rhythm and sound, supporting engagement, coordination, and communication skills. Children who already play instruments such as guitar, piano, violin, or cello are encouraged to bring them along and explore how these can be combined with African rhythms in a collaborative ensemble setting. Movement and dance are also key parts of the sessions. Children learn simple dance steps inspired by African celebrations, helping develop coordination, physical confidence, and rhythm awareness. Traditional African folktales are used to support listening, imagination, and social learning, while introducing children to cultural values such as cooperation and resilience. Our facilitators bring extensive experience working with children and young people. One facilitator works within Children’s Services at a local council, while the other is an experienced school music teacher. Both have training and experience in SEND awareness, autism awareness, behaviour support, safeguarding, and inclusive practice. All staff hold enhanced DBS checks, and we follow strict safeguarding, health and safety, and risk assessment procedures. A SEND-trained staff member is present to provide additional support where required. Our sessions promote creativity, confidence, teamwork, and cultural understanding, ensuring every child feels included, valued, and empowered to participate.

Obase-Aboli Music
Musician/ Music Educator
Obase-Aboli is a musician and music educator originally from Cameroon, now based in the United Kingdom. He is a skilled balafon player and has released several albums showcasing traditional and contemporary African music. Obase-Aboli is the Artistic Director of Ujhasuma CIC, which delivers creative workshops that explore African music, culture, and collaborative learning. With experience working with children and young people in educational and community settings, Obase-Aboli specialises in music education that encourages creativity, confidence, and self-expression through improvisation. His workshops focus on accessible, hands-on musical participation where children explore rhythm, instruments, and storytelling in a supportive environment. By encouraging improvisation and experimentation, he helps participants build confidence in their creative abilities while developing listening, teamwork, and communication skills. Obase-Aboli has experience delivering sessions for both mainstream groups and children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). His approach is inclusive and adaptable, using rhythm, repetition, and sensory engagement to ensure that all participants can take part regardless of prior musical experience or learning style. Activities are structured to support participation at different levels, allowing children to contribute in ways that suit their individual strengths and needs. He holds an enhanced DBS check and follows appropriate safeguarding and health and safety procedures when working with children. Through his work with Ujhasuma CIC, Obase-Aboli aims to empower young people through music, cultural learning, and creative collaboration, helping them develop confidence, curiosity, and a sense of connection through shared musical experiences.
