What we'll do
We will be hosting a weekend of networking; skills and sharing of practice, with the option to camp overnight. This year we are excited to announce that we have on offer an afternoon workshop a 'Celebration of Community and the Power of Story'. This practical, hands-on workshop with Lauren Kinnersley and Sarah Lawfull will explore ideas for encouraging nature connection and imaginative play through puppets, song, and story making. Build confidence to share storytelling techniques, including singing, create your own story with others, and make a simple puppet. Lauren brings her passions for puppetry, play and nature connection alongside expertise in leading Forest School with early years, SEND/ SEMH children and young people. An experienced Forest School trainer with a background in teaching and youth work, Sarah's love of Forest School led her to chairing the FSA, a role she hands on on the very day we are gathering. Arrivals from 10.30am on Saturday (activities from 1pm) and finish at 12.00pm on Sunday. There is the option to camp overnight on the Saturday evening. Please bring everything you need for 1 night of comfortable camping. There is a barn in the case of inclement weather during the day, but please dress appropriately for the forecast weather conditions. There will be access to cold running water onsite. To help protect our host site, we are aiming for a ‘leave no trace’ policy for this weekend. We will not be able to provide any rubbish disposal facilities, so when leaving the site on Sunday, please ensure that you take all belongings and rubbish home with you. We have aimed to keep the cost of the weekend low to try to make it accessible to as many local members as possible. It has been subsidised by the income we generated though our committees hard work organising and running the national FSA conference in 2021. Please ensure you fill out your emergency contact and medical details in the Eequ booking form. Draft timings Saturday 17th May: 10.30am – Arrivals welcomed for setting up tents, networking and reource swaps 12.00pm- Lunch, please bring a packed lunch for this. 1.00pm – Discussion on a current FS topics 2.00-5.00pm – A Celebration of Community and the Power of Story. 6.30pm – shared community meal around the campfire followed by some gentle entertainments such as sharing of craft skills, a quiz and relaxing around the campfire. Sunday 18th May: 9.00-9.30am – Breakfast/Morning check in 10.00am – choice of morning activity 11.30am – community gathering.Discussion on how our group is functioning, we welcome any input/feedback and of course help! 12.00pm – Finish. Pack up and clear site.
About your mentors
OxonBucksBerks local FSA group
FSA group for the three counties
We are a local group of Forest School Leaders and outdoor education practitioners who regularly meet in order to support each other through shared experiences and training. Anyone working in this field and based in Oxon, Bucks and Berks is welcome to attend meetings, whether they are a member of the FSA or not.
Sarah Lawfull
Leadership Coach, Trainer, and Consultant
With a background in mainstream teaching, early years, SEND, and voluntary youth work, I have witnessed the impact of implementing Forest School's ethos and principles in every area of my life. I set up Where The Fruit Is to raise awareness of Forest School's power to build communities with and improve outcomes for invisible young people, many of whom are neurodivergent, who struggle to access education. I now collaborate with NGOs and county councils to lead local and national nature-based education projects. As co-founder of the Nature Premium campaign, I advocate for all children to have funding for regular nature-based learning experiences from 3 to 18 years as part of their education. I am an FSA-endorsed trainer, the Forest School Association Chair, a Royal Society of Arts Fellow, and a member of the Henley Centre for Coaching and the International Coaching Federation. My passion is helping people of all ages find their purpose, strengths, and joy to fulfil their potential through learning and playing in nature.
Lauren Kinnersley
Freelance Forest School Leader
I qualified as a Forest School Leader in 2006, and completed Steiner Waldorf Teacher Training in 2012. I am interested in finding creative ways to enhance my practice with young people and enjoy incorporating singing, music making, puppets and storytelling into my work. I have a particular interest in SEND and my work includes young people who are struggling in a mainstream setting, and I also work with SEND schools. I am about to begin a Postgraduate Certificate in Therapeutic Play, to deepen my understanding and skill in supporting young people to make positive changes in their lives through the power of play.
