About your mentors
Call of the Woods
Forest School for Home Educated Children!
I’ve been a Forest School Leader since 2015 where I trained at The Mohair Centre before working in schools, nursery settings at also at Plumpton College. Since the arrival of our son Kes, and bouncing back from lockdown I’ve concentrated my efforts on developing sessions for Home Educated children as part of Little Forest School, Rooted Path Forest School and now under my own umbrella Call of the Woods. As well as running our monthly Grow up Wild group at Wilderness Wood with Karen, I work as a young people’s mentor at Hastings based Project Rewild.
Rooted Path Forest School
Exploring, Learning and Growing Outdoors
I love the outdoors where children’s natural intelligence is developed, and natural curiosity encouraged. Children are happier and healthier when they have regular opportunities to learn and play outdoors, building the foundations for a lifelong connection with nature and our planet. I am a qualified teacher (PGCE) with over ten years teaching and leadership experience. Since 2020 I also qualified as a Level 3 Forest School Leader. I am fortunate to lead weekly Forest School sessions at 3 Primary Schools in East Sussex and a monthly Home Education group at Wilderness Wood. I am passionate that children and young people deserve and benefit from extended periods of play during every school day helping children of all ages to develop, follow their instincts and naturally play independently and together with their friends outdoors. Qualifications & CPD : Level 3 Forest School trained ITC Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid ITC Level 3 Award in Forest School First Aid PGCE - Primary School & QTS Qualified Teacher Status ITC Reframing how to work with Behaviour and Stress in the Outdoors Enhanced DBS Checked

Weather-appropriate clothing including a coat and waterproof trousers, and spare layers if cold! Wear lined wellies or hiking boots. Trainers are okay in the summer months. A change of clothes is always a good idea too. A packed lunch, a hot or cold drink and some snacks.
Learning aims
Aim 1
Under our watchful eye, children will learn bush-craft skills such as fire lighting and making kindling, shelter building, rope work, foraging and cookery.
Aim 3
Children have the time to play, to let their imaginations unfold,, making sense of the world around them at their own pace whilst enhancing physical, emotional, and cognitive growth.
Aim 2
Our groups nurture a strong sense of community, encourage problem solving and resilience and enable children to hone their social skills.
Aim 4
We foster a deeper understanding of the natural world, encouraging care and stewardship. We also observe and celebrate seasonal transitions marked by the four fire festivals.
