Our curriculum
The IOW Film School provides creative and engaging arts sessions using filmmaking, photography, gaming, podcasting and digital media to inspire creativity, confidence and social connection. Our workshops offer a relaxed, welcoming and supportive environment where young people can explore their interests, express themselves creatively, make friendships and develop new skills through hands-on projects and collaborative activities. We welcome learners of all abilities and experience levels, including those who may feel anxious in traditional settings, struggle socially, or benefit from a smaller and more supportive learning environment that encourages confidence, wellbeing and personal growth. The IOW Film School
Creative Arts and wellbeing
The IOW Film School delivers creative arts sessions that support young people’s wellbeing, confidence and social connection through filmmaking, photography, gaming and digital media activities. Our sessions provide a fun, welcoming space where children can make friends, express themselves creatively and build new skills in a supportive environment ?
Across the IOW

Learning aim
Aim 1
Build confidence, creativity and teamwork through filmmaking, photography, podcasting, gaming and hands-on digital media projects.
Equipment
At The IOW Film School, we focus on accessible, real-world equipment so learning doesn’t stop when the session ends. We use iPhone cameras, wireless microphones, editing and ai enhanced apps, and ring lights to show that high-quality content can be created with tools people already have or can easily access. While learners also get the chance to explore professional camera kit during sessions (professional Canon 5d Mk2 plus various lenses including the 50mm and tilt shift), the emphasis is on transferable skills — so if they don’t have expensive equipment at home, they can still continue creating, filming and developing their ideas independently through The IOW Film School. Learners are also encouraged to bring their own camera equipment with them to use and practise with.

We focus on photography, filmmaking, and creative media in a supportive environment where children can learn at their own pace. Sessions are drop-off, however parents or carers are very welcome to stay briefly at the start if a child feels anxious and needs help settling in. Please discuss this with Laura if you feel you need to stay for the whole session and we can accommodate this. We prioritise: Small group sizes Clear structure and routine Kindness, respect, and safety Confidence-building rather than pressure Children are encouraged to take part, but never forced. Watching, listening, or taking things slowly all count as participation. To keep sessions safe and enjoyable for everyone, we expect children to: Treat others and equipment with care Follow safety instructions Use respectful behaviour and language If a child’s behaviour puts themselves or others at risk, we may contact parents and ask for the child to be collected. Booking a place confirms acceptance of our full Terms & Conditions and Behaviour Policy. Supporting Anxious Children & Additional Needs Isle of Wight Film School is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and understanding environment for children with anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or additional needs. We understand that every child is different. Our approach includes: Small, low-pressure groups Predictable session structure Clear explanations of what will happen and when Choice-based activities No expectation to speak or share work Time and space to observe before participating Children are never forced to take part in activities they are not ready for. Quiet participation, watching, or engaging for short periods is completely acceptable. Parents are encouraged to share any relevant information in advance, including: Anxiety triggers Sensory sensitivities Support strategies that work well Medical or emotional needs This allows us to adapt sessions appropriately and support each child with care and respect. If a child becomes overwhelmed, we provide calm support and, where needed, will contact parents to discuss next steps in the child’s best interests. Our aim is for children to feel: Safe Seen Supported Proud of what they achieve, at their own pace Safeguarding & Child Welfare Isle of Wight Film School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We: Place children’s safety and wellbeing at the centre of all activities Provide clear boundaries, expectations, and supervision Maintain appropriate adult-to-child ratios Ensure all equipment is used safely and responsibly Respond promptly and appropriately to any welfare concerns All sessions are delivered in a respectful, inclusive environment where children are treated with dignity and care. Concerns relating to a child’s safety, wellbeing, or behaviour will be addressed sensitively and, where appropriate, discussed with parents or carers. We act in the best interests of the child at all times. Parents are responsible for sharing relevant medical, emotional, or behavioural information in advance to support safe participation. Isle of Wight Film School reserves the right to refuse or discontinue attendance where continued participation would compromise the safety or wellbeing of the child, other participants, or staff.

My experience consists of a leisure activity, on a specific date(s), and therefore the 14-day ‘cooling off period’ under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 does not apply.
