1 April: Make a Diary in a Day with Bookmaker Hazel Garrity
In a relaxed, supportive atmosphere, we will be making personalised journals using traditional bookbinding techniques and tools.
Follow step-by-step demonstrations and surprise yourself by learning new skills. You will make a carefully crafted journal from scratch choosing from a range of colourful papers and adding your own special details. It’s fun to include inserts, pull-outs, envelopes, flaps and recycled materials to reflect your personality and interests. You will be proud to take home your unique book and can continue to add more words and images in the months to come.
About Hazel:
Hazel's chief enthusiasms have always been words, books and making things. As a secondary school English teacher, she has worked with young people to give them the confidence to be creative with language. Now she wants to explore the possibilities offered by combining words with the traditional craft of constructing books in different forms and expressing ideas in different ways.
2 April: Special Effects Make Up for Movie and Theatre with Make Up Artist Antonio Reche
This workshop will introduce participants to the art of special effects make-up focussing on fantasy/horror, inspiring creativity using professional and homemade techniques.
This workshop will explore different creative methods, to show how to create easy special effects for fantasy/horror for movies and theatre. Toto will introduce how to draw and design for specific characters, and he will do a practical demonstration with a model. The focus will be on Dracula, Frankenstein, zombie, fantasy creatures. Participants will need to bring with them some photos or a clear idea for them to base the makeup design. Participants will work in pairs; practicing on each other’s faces or hands, arms. Participants will have the opportunity to take photos to document their progress.
By the end of the workshop, participants will go home with knowledge of how to do easy horror make-up to apply for Halloween, parties etc. They may also be inspired to explore further, with a view to training in the theatre and movie industry.
About Antonio:
Antonio (Toto) Reche-Martinez is a Spanish National and special effects make-up artist. Toto holds a degree from the London School of Fashion in special effects for movies and theatre which provided him with ample knowledge in make-up costume, sets, puppetry and special effects. Toto has since worked 9 years in a pantomime company, designing and making all the aspect of the production. Toto has worked in different arts disciplines all his life, and uses his knowledge to present workshops for adults and children alike. He holds diplomas in drawing, ceramics and in teaching for adult education. More recently, Toto published his first illustrated children’s book called “The Frog’s Kiss”.

Products used on skin may contain ingredients that some participants could be sensitive to. Latex will be used and so will makeup wipes/ makeup remover. Please advise if your child has any latex or skin allergies or sensitivities.
Products are all washable and water based, but participants will need to bring a T-shirt or some old clothing to wear that they don’t mind getting messy!

9 April: Songwriting and Album Art Creation with Ben Brown and Catalina Carvajal
Join musician Ben Brown and visual artist Catalina Carvajal for this free creative workshop for 10-16 year olds! Explore your innate creativity to spontaneously create exciting and unique works or audio and visual art. Participants will go on a creative journey, writing and recording a song with Ben and creating the cover art with Catalina. In this workshop we will explore songwriting; rhythm, rhyming and harmony as well as visual arts. Together we will write a song by brainstorming ideas and using a variety of creative techniques and games. - Once created, we will then record the song in the space! We will also cocreate a piece of cover art to accompany the track. The completed tracks will be uploaded to Bandcamp as part of the Blank Page EP which will be downloadable for free (individual participants will not be named).
About Ben and Catalina:
Ben is a social musician and composer based in Manningtree. He is passionate about music making in all settings and with all groups of people. He believes everybody is musical and that anyone can make music with anyone else and is privileged to be able to facilitate this process; it is a source of unending inspiration and enjoyment.
Catalina is a visual artist with a passion for illustration, murals, storytelling, and colour. She's also passionate about music and has designed a few album covers. You can find her mural work around East Anglia. Catalina enjoys working with digital and mixed media and takes inspiration from drawing in her sketchbooks, listening to music and observing the world. She is originally from Colombia and lived in Mexico before arriving in the UK seven years ago.
