A summary
We are In The Canopy! Join us for an outdoor bushcraft session, where we provide a fun and engaging introduction to the outdoor environment. Through achievable tasks and activities, participants develop their range of physical, social and emotional skills, resulting in a positive impact on communication, motivation, health and wellbeing. Learn a new skill, challenge yourself, take managed risks, have an adventure! We start our session with some group games led by our fabulous young leaders. Then we gather around the fire circle to remind ourselves of how to stay safe, and of course, the ceremonial lighting of the campfire! As part of the session, children will help to prepare food (often with a "wild" element), which will then be cooked on the fire and served up for lunch. Previously we've cooked spiced toffee apples with rose petal sprinkles, chilli and nachos with wild flower salsa, nettle gnocchi, wild pesto pasta, campfire pizza, nettle flatbreads, French toast with berries and wild flower topping, cricket toffee, and egg fried rice with wild garlic. We also provide sandwiches, fruit, popcorn and s'mores. All food is vegetarian and nut-free. Other food requirements can also be catered for (e.g. vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free). Other activities include fire lighting, whittling, use of saws, axes and drills, hammocks, swings, slack lines, den building, mud kitchen, giant bubbles, clay modelling, crafts and games. We finish the session back around the fire circle, enjoying the hot food that everyone has helped prepare, and singing camp fire songs.

I think I'm funny and some of the children do too! I'm also the one that makes sure the right things are in the right places. I'll help you with bushcraft skills and will always have a go at crafts, I might not be very good at them but that's ok!
Josie Giraffe
Forest School Leader
Crafty, creative and caring. Often found teaching whittling around the camp fire.
What you need to know...
These are drop-off sessions (for children aged 5 and above) – there is no need to stay with your child. However, you are welcome to stay if you want to, or if your child would like you to! (If your child is under 5 years old and not in full-time education, they will need an adult to stay). Please let us know if your child requires additional support in school or has SEND or and EHCP so we can discuss their needs with you. The sessions take place at Howden Junior School, Howden, DN14 7SL. There is a limited amount of car parking on the school site (but In The Canopy and Howden Junior School can’t take any responsibility for your vehicle or belongings when on the site). There is zoned time-limited street parking nearby and several council operated car parks in the town centre. The sessions take place entirely outside, whatever the weather, so it's really important to make sure you dress appropriately. Please bring several layers, and a warm coat and sturdy shoes if it’s wet, and a sun hat if it’s hot! Some activities involve mud, water and clay, so children should wear clothes that they can get messy in. As part of the session, children will help to prepare food, which will then be cooked on a fire and served up for lunch. We also provide sandwiches (cheese/ham), fruit, popcorn, s'mores and drinks. Children are also welcome to bring their own food (but no nuts please) and will need a named, refillable water bottle. Please let us know if your child has any food allergies/intolerances to allow us to cater for them.
